Only recently have I started to bring food on board but I'm not bringing a side of beef or anything like that.
I bring on a bag of potato chips because cruise lines charge too much for them ($4-$5 US for a tin of Pringles) and sometimes if I have room I will bring 6 cans of Diet Coke ($1.95 US + 15% gratuity for a can of pop is just gouging in my opinion).
I guess that, because I travel so frequently, packing is just another chore for me - even if it is for a cruise. So, I keep packing simple, and time devoted to it at a minimum.
This means no extras - just throw in the essentials, and go. Food would fall in the category of extras for me, so it's something I don't take.
Yes, we bring Chex Mix and things, and 2 liter Sodas, so that we have late night snacks in the cabin. My hubby likes his late night snacks. No matter what else is served.
I said I don't ever take food on. And usually I don't take ANYTHING extra. But there IS a certain exception to that...
When the ship stops at Roatan, I take spaghetti sauce, oatmeal, powdered drink mixes, raisins, powdered milk, instant pudding, jello, salad dressing mix, canned tuna, assorted pastas, rice, beans, biscuit or muffin mixes, chocolate chips, Vitamin C enriched candies, Sniders Pretzels, pop tarts, Mac n' Cheese, Hostess Fruit Pies, Instant Breakfast... you know, just a few suitcases full of stuff like that.
I always take some snack/granola type bars for airports or excursions. This time I'm also taking some ginger chews and ginger candies for my husband, who tends to get seasick and who is a diabetic. We're also having a "cabin crawl" with our roll call group (over "there"), so I'm bringing some snacks (some little treat type things) to put out for that.

It's the LAST thing we'd consider bringing on a cruise!
Certainly understand that those with health issues or small children might need to do this ....
