Many of the more interesting shops have a web presence and will handle your complaints when you get back home. We shopped in Dublin at a shop next door to the one the ship suggested. Got very good prices, great service, and everyone back home loved the unique items that the ship suggested store did not have.

I agree...not much of a shopper, but will wander about if I have nothing better to do. Since I dive a lot on my cruises, I usually get something from the dive shop.

We bought a carpet in Kusadasi. It's gorgeous and I never regretted buying it, even though we spent more than we anticipated. We started out thinking about getting just a small rug, just like you mentioned. Just something for under a coffee table. We talked it over and agreed before we walked in the door that was absolutely positively all we'd get. About an hour later that little rug escalated to a living room sized carpet. If you go to a carpet dealer in Turkey - be ready for a really hard sell. It's quite an experience!

And you will always remember where you bought it and the overall experience which counts for a lot.

You probably could have bought it cheaper locally but where is the fun in that?

I have looked closely at all "oriental" type rugs since we bought it. It's sort of like after you get a new car you suddenly take notice of every single car out there like yours! But I've never seen one just like it, so I feel good about that. And besides, you're right, we do have fond memories of where and when we got it. DH loves telling the story about how they brought out the gorgeous Turkish salesgirl with Turkish beer to help with the sale. Hey, it worked !

I bet it influenced your husband. Now they should have brought out a gorgeous sales clerk sans shirt to help influence your decision....

Funny, that's how I ended up with these really nice earrings in Italy. You think it was a plot?
