Probably most people go into stores that look appealing, whether or not they are recommended. (They may not even realize that they are on the list)

When we were in Rome last year the cruiseline warned us about the blackmarket sidewalk vendors that sell the fake Luis Vuitton handbags and gear. They said it's illegal to sell them, and even if you are caught buying the fakes you can get in trouble. When we went on the excursions the tourguide once again warned us that we might see these things...and that they were illegal and both the buyer and seller could get fined. As soon as we got off the bus there they were, and we all descended on them like buzzards...buying up as many as we could carry! Hey, they are cheap and made great gifts!! LOL!

I look everywhere, and shop where they have what I need/want. I avoid the places the ship's people recommend avoiding. I try to go a little bit off the beaten path ( drug stores in other places are very interesting!), but keep my wits about me.

Often we have gone farther into town and found many of the goods seen close to the docks...at a much lower price. We're not buying anything really expensive, more the souvenir tees and fridge magnet type of stuff.

I shop at what store appeals to me but we do not do alot of shopping while in port. I prefer to spend my money in the good ole USA.

We always try to buy something for the house whenever crusing overseas. It's so fun to look at that object throughout the years and remember when and where we got it...and the stories behind it.

One of the most fun shopping trips was a visit to a carpet shop in Turkey. The owner showed us carpet after carpet, trying really hard to get us to buy one. He even showed us a flying carpet...and I managed to catch it in this photo. It was a really fun time and we always laugh about that day!

I avoid shopping like the plague, but if I did shop I would go out of my way to avoid the ship recommended stores. We all know of the kickbacks, um commissions, the shops pay to be "recommended".

although i feel safer with what the ship reccomends i am always
up to sneaking offf to do my own thing.
