Do you feel safe on a cruise ship?

Due to some high profile cases that have made the headlines over the past year, cruise ship safety has become a hot button topic.

There was a segment on the Today Show this morning that addressed cruise ship safety.

For those who have cruised before, do you feel safe on a cruise? Have you ever felt uncomfortable or threatened while on a cruise? Are you more hesitant to book a cruise now due to the safety concerns that have been raised? Do you beleive that cruising is a more dangerous form of vacationing than other forms of vacations?

I believe they are safe because I am always aware of my surroundings!! You are sailing on a small city with thousands of strangers!! Don't let your guard down, stay near other people, after dark children and adults should use the buddy system!!

My Signature Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to know why I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved.

Much agreed Sue. I think that sometimes people let their guard down too much. They get too comfortable with their surroundings.

I used to work at Disneyland. We as cast members always felt that when tourists came to visit, they would let go of all common sense. They would let their guard down and do things they wouldn't normally do. It was great that they felt "safe" being at Disneyland. But we always thought that being at Disneyland was like being anywhere else, why should you act differently?

I feel the same about cruise ships. I would never do anything on a ship that I wouldn't do on land. I think that sometimes people feel too comfortable have a little too much to drink and lose all sense of safety, right and wrong, etc.

I feel just fine on a cruise. As long as you "behave", you should not have anything to worry about.

Yes! Yes! Yes!

Safer than most places I have traveled... but then I don't get sloppy drink and brag about how much cash is in my stateroom...

I think you just need to have common sense.

They said that on average between 2003-2005, crime on ships occured at a rate of 1 per ever 150,000 passengers.

Compare that to land, where crime rate was 79 crimes per every 150,000 people.

Well I think even if you behave, things can still ppen. For instance what if a person is behaving and walking around the ship late at night and alone, and a meany is out there hoping to catch someone unaware?

With all the things that have happend recently, I no longer walk around the ship at night, at least not alone. I used to really enjoy walking around the promendade sometimes at 2 in the morning. It is so peaceful , you can see so many stars! I never gave any thought to my safety. Now of course am more cautious, and think most people are too. I guess it is like walking in the city late at night, always be aware of your surroundings and try to use the buddy system.

It seemed to me hearing and watching the specials about the people who disappear at sea that the common underlying theme was that they were drunk off their rockers. Please don't misunderstand - for those that come upon harm from a passenger or crew member who is a meanie (great term) this doesn't apply. But if you don't want to fall overboard seems you should stay away from the sides while consuming ridiculous amounts of alcohol. JMHO

The latest reports don't bother me really. Considering how many people cruise each year....the odds are really that high. People just have to be aware of their surroundings...

But I do feel safe on a cruiseship.
