I have always felt safe, but I am cautious. But I roam the ship at night while my DH retires earlier than I do
I feel pretty safe but I'm always alert, also. I have wandered the ship in the wee hours of the morning, also but you need to pay attention and not put yourself in a position you can't get out of.
I think they're certainly at least as safe as a land based resort. But we all know that that's not totally safe. Common sense, awareness of your surroundings, all that stuff should still be in place. As a man, I feel VERY safe on ships, but would probably advise women to take the normal precautions of not being alone/vulnerable with strangers. Maybe that's just my ingrained chauvanism...
The only times I haven't felt safe on a ship was BECAUSE of the drunks...I've watched a drunk proudly announce that he just burned a hole in someone's tuxedo with his cigarette because the guy "took over a slot machine he was watching!" (On Crystal Cruises) I reported him...I've watched drunk men hassle women in the lounges (Princess Cruises), and straight drunk frat-types hassle gay men who were minding their own business (Celebrity). Yes all of this was rare, but just like you take extra precautions at home late at night, it's probably wise to take at least some of those while on a cruise, and out of your cabin late at night (when the drunks are seemingly most in evidence )
I think I feel about the same in a ship's bar as I do in a land-based bar. Most people are decent...but there are jerks, drunks, idiots, and people to avoid in both!

First off I live in "SIN" City, one of the biggest destination captials of the world for vacation. All I can say is OMG YES cruise ships are safe. To be honest I think this is all media Hype and getting people upset over nothing. Even my Mom who has only been one 4 day RCL cruise many many years ago is all upset thinking that we are going a cruises that could so very dangerous. I think that the media has just brain washed to peopleto believe things that they do not have first hand information on. Now that is not tosay that I don't believe that there are some dangers out there, there is EVERYWHERE but I believe that the cruise industry is getting hit far to hard.

Normally, I feel safe...I do have one incident I remember when I was 19 and cruising with my sister & parents...I tended to party and drink (when drinking at 18 was still legal on the ships) and close out the disco while my parents & sister went to bed. I remember one night as I was walking back to my cabin in the wee hours of the morning, one of the secruity guards was following me. He was from one of the Caribbean countries (or central Americas) and kept asking me in this strange tone if I needed to be escorted back to my cabin. I kept telling him, "No." And continued, but he kept following me. When I got to my cabin...I continued to walk right by it (knowing he was still following me and I didn't want him to know what cabin i was in) and went to a populated place instead until I knew he was gone.....then I went to the room.....
When we were on the cruise last October, my daughter and grandaughter, 17, were sitting on the aft deck in the afternoon, at a table people watching!! A guy around 60 came over and knelt down between my grandaughter and I and asked if he could kiss my grandaughters ankle!! Just then, the two maitre D's from dinner came out of the buffet, and I waved them over, They walked him away, we didn't see him on the aft after that!
Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to know why I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved.
Most people walk into and out of your life . . . but FRIENDS leave footprints in your heart
A cruise ship is a small city, so you have to be aware of your surroundings just as if you were on land. You do not leave your common sense at home just because you are on a cruise, although we all know the ones who do.

Like I said, the legal drinking age on the cruise lines use to be 18....probably one of the reasons it was pushed up to 21!!!
I think my own mother said something to the same effect the next morning....but I wasn't drinking by myself......just going back to the room by myself!!!! (Do you prefer I go back to my room with a guy??? )
