Here's an article that suggests some creepy places to visit:
World's Creepiest Places
At first when I saw something about Stoker, I was thinking of Romania where the inspiration for the Dracula story lived. My father in law was born and raised in the Transylvania mountains near Vlad the Impaler's castle (well, in a small village in the same mountain range). When my husband was a kid, his father took the family on a trip there to the poor village.
The Japanese location reminds me of the novel "You Only Live Twice." Ian Fleming wrote about a place near a mountain where people who felt the need to commit suicide could go. I remember he described the poisonous plants there in great detail. This was where James Bond's nemesis in this book (and the movie) was putting his dastardly plot into motion.
