This weekend we were watching a couple of episodes of the Love Boat from the DVD I won a year or so ago. I was pointing out the obvious shot against the background (blue screen) shots. In the credits, it was mentioned that episode was shot at 20th Century Fox (I think). I think they had a couple of guest stars shot their finale scene at San Pedro. There was one sign that said "Berth 103," but right next to that sign was the actual building which was marked "Berth 93A." Usually the cruiseships go out of 91-93 nowadays, so I decided to check my ancient circa 1997 Thomas Brothers Map book and berth 103 is in the industrial area.
A few of the episodes were actually shot at sea as I knew someone who was one of the happy smiley faces once. He was our temporary secretary who was an actor and he got a Med cruise out of the gig. He didn't know he was going to be one of the happy smiley faces as he was playing the friend of the main character.
I think it was this episode as there's a Russell Scott in it:

There were usually 2 shows per season that were filmed onboard. They were "2 hour specials". The rest were done at the studio and a few locations in the LA area. Back in 1978 they were using the same piers 91-93A that they use today.
We appear in the episode that was filmed during our cruise in 1978. It shows up now as 2 episodes in Season 2 Volume 2. It has a long title that starts with Allas poor Dryer, Disco Baby.... Raymond Burr was in the episode.

Are you going to buy it? If I rent it, I'll ask which scenes you're in.

I've seen people talk about shoretrips whenever this subject comes up. I believe it's a company that books shore excursions for groups. But I wouldn't just go by this site. Maybe a good way to check on major group bookings is to google your ship and date of sailing and see what comes up. If an organization is hosting a group onboard, maybe it'll show up in that kind of search.
I did just that. I googled my cruise that leaves on Jan 2nd, 2010. Found out there will be
"Neurology at Sea lectures" Can't wait. I'm going to be learning something new Neurology. I can't wait. I'm going to be smart.
I know time's are changing and all. However it would be nice to know if your cruise is a theme or not. Yes everyone has a right to their likes ands lifestyle. Some people are just not comfortable with it. I'm not just talking about Gay's, but everything. Some people don't even want to be around themselves. So you can not please everyone all the time.
On our cruise there was a small Scientific American group who had several of the conference rooms reserved for their lectures. They sounded interesting but they would not allow non-participants in.

As I said above, we had a group involved with medical technology. Not that big of a percentage of the passengers. Not a wild group. I guess the same would be of a group of scientists. Maybe not interesting to be at a dinner table with a bunch of them discussing the latest lecture or meeting, but not going to take over the ship.
