Post Take precautions on a cruise ship (The Charlotte Observer)

You're off on a long-dreamed-of vacation, a cruise to sunny Caribbean islands. You're on a big cruise liner with a couple thousand other passengers. There are doctors and nurses on board, locks on your stateroom door, lots of public spaces, and ship personnel at your beck and call. Safety isn't something to worry about. Not so, says Miami maritime lawyer Charles R. Lipcon in a new book, "Unsafe ...

Thanks for posting. The phone numbers of the FBI and Coast Guard are things I haven't had on past cruises. I'll add them to my 'cruise stuff' information.

Using your common sense is very important when cruising. Thanks for the reminder.

Interesting article, but I have an issue with the Coast Guard number. From my days as a sailor and workng in the marine industry I know that the Coast Guard will often not answer calls placed from a cell phone. I's not that they don't want too, but can't. Cell phones use towers and the signal maybe bounced from one tower to the next making it hard if not impossible to triangulate the call and get a fixed position.

Now if you are on a cruise ship and can provide the name of the ship (assuming this is possible) you may get a different response. That of course, you can get a signal to a make a call while at sea.

My advice would be to seek the Coast Guard out at the first port after the incident, or if in a Foreign port seek out a US Embassy or Representative, that you can talk too and can help at the first port available.

One thing to note is that the lawyer quoted runs an ad on the cruise-bruise website. Not sure, but he may be the one who actually set up that website, which is all about suing the cruiselines, imo.

    Just saying.
