On a larger ship, typically when does your luggage arrive in your cabin? 3 pm? 5 pm? 7 pm? I am trying to pack but am uncertain of how to pack for that first night dinner at 6pm... should I carry it on?
We have had our luggage delivered as early as 3 and as late as 8. You just never know. A couple of times I have gone down the hall where they had them stacked and got my own. Pack something in your carryon for dinner if you feel the need to change your clothes. First night is always casual so I wouldn't fret over it. Or should I say, I never fret over it. It is what it is.
It really does depend on the ship, the time you checked in, where you're located on the ship, the cruise port, etc, etc, etc. We've had luggage delivered within a couple of hours after getting onboard up to many hours later, including after dinner.
I always tell people to pack a small suitcase that you can carry on the ship. Put a change of clothes, swimming suit, some toiletries, etc. This can be invaluable when getting on the ship and getting settled in. They are very lenient about what you wear to dinner the first night knowing that some people may not have their luggage yet. It's the only night you'll see alot of people wearing shorts and it's never a problem.
And since they require you to have your suitcases in the hallway the last night of your cruise, this small suitcase can also be used the morning of disembarkation to put your night clothes and toiletries in, which will make it easier getting off the ship.

Great point, Pete! I will need 3 small ones since we have 3 separate cabins.
The safe answer is if you want to be sure to have something to change into, carry it on. It's the only way to be 100% sure of having it.
I have heard tales of people putting their cases on at night in the bed clothes and then waking up in hte morning to find they have not left anything out to come home in. I don't know how true this is, but makes you think.

Cruises booked: Queen Victoria November 2009, QM2 May 2010 and Queen Victoria March 2011.
Sometimes, I will board in something that can be worn to dinner, with 'afternoon' clothes (swiimsuit, shorts, whatever) in my carry on. Then, a soon as I can get uinto my cabin, 'll change out and hang up what I wore on, just in case.
In every article about packing for a cruise, it will be recommended to put valuables (jewelry, cameras, etc.), medicine, sunscreen, and a change of clothing in your carryon. You can actually carry on more onboard a ship than an airplane. As long as you can carry it and as long as you can place in on the security belt at check in.

Yep. The medicine.
EVERY cruise, I have to take DH's meds out of the bag we plan to check, and put them in the carry on. He just can't seem to remember that one.
Another of his favorite tricks is to forget that he's already packed his umentionables, so he puts another week's worth in.
No, I don't pack for him. But I do REpack for him.
