A suit and tie, or blazer and tie would be best, but if he gives you a hard time, he could getaway with a long sleeve dress shirt and tie!! What cruisline are you sailing??
Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to know why I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved.

You will be doing a Med cruise, right? I forget which ship you will be sailing---that might make a big difference in my answer.

Generally more folks will adhere to the dress codes in the Med. I would think a sport coat with dress shirt & tie would make him a very handsome young man on formal night.

I am one who hates ties.. I own one suit and I HATE Wearing it.. But to make wife happy,, I will on occasion. (Happy wife, happy life)
when we sailed Disney in 02'. Our son was the same age as your son now. A nice dress shirt and tie was ok, he would skip the tie and wore a sport coat some nights..
But judge the rest of the room and do what you feel is right.. If he is one to not mind looking good and getting all done up,, then he will be fine.. But if he is anything like my son was/is,, it's like pulling teeth.. for all of us.. lol
    have a great trip
