Dressing up lis part of the total cruise experience, and should not be missed.
Unfortunately, in this country, we have become so lax in our personal standards of dress and demeanor. And we don't even realize that we have given up something.
Formal wear" should not be just for weddings and senior proms.
Proper attire is more than just raiding the wardrobe or shopping the fancy corner in a department store. It is a way of living == and dressing up promotes civility, politeness, diplomacy.
.
It's kionda like wering uniforms in grade school. Educators ahve noted too often that children behave much better when they are dressed up and not in raggedy jeans, shirt tails hanging out, sloppy skirts.
I am a pretty casual person myself and I am not a clothes horse. but I can feel the difference im ME when I have taken the trouble to dress up and "look nice."
Now I wish I could get that point across to all the jeans and shorts wearers at our Sunday church service!!!

We have been on more than 30 cruises, and for formal night my husband wears a sport coat and a tie and dress slacks. He wears jeans to work every day, and he did have a dark suit that he wore on cruises, but it is so out of style after 20 years that the sport coat and tie is what he wears. I wear very nice dresses (nicer when I was skinny)....I think we look fine, we have never had any complaints....but he would NEVER rent or wear a tuxedo.....if he had to I would not be able to cruise any more, and I do enjoy my 2 cruises a year.....I agree that jeans, etc should not be allowed, but some of us who choose not to wear the tuxes do not do so because of economy, we do so because our husbands would not cruise otherwise. We wear the same thing on formal nights on cruises that we do to weddings....I could definitely afford to rent a tux for my husband, but he would not wear it, and our cruising career would be over if it was required....

Joan, it isn't just educators who've noticed this behavior uptick, but restaurants have known this for years. I have to applaud those places that keep a rack of sportcoats and ties available for men to dress in compliance: they have a dress code, and they enforce it this way. Wish the cruiselines would follow suit. I'm sure that once the word got out, there would be fewer and fewer folks showing up at the entrance to the dining room improperly clad.Originally Posted by joramrose

Suzanne and many others, you are right on!! I wear a uniform or a suit, shirt and tie (depending on assignment) 4-5 days a week. The only time I ever didn't was in an undercover assignment and that was not a pretty sightor no day at the beach as my wife would say! So I'm not always looking forward to dressing up! Yet, we know what the dress code is when on a cruise and dress accordingly out of respect for the cruise line (the crew that also dresses up) AND the other guests. Some people look very much forward to dressing up and a cruise is one of the few places left where they can still do it. We respect that plus we respect the rules and regs that the cruise line sets! There are cruise lines where you don't have to dress formal and we respect that too; to each his/her own! Lastly, I want to commend the fine folks on this thread for remaining civil and respecting each other's opinion
. I have seen it differently elsewhere on several occasions when this same topic has appeared, Great job guys and girls! My hat's off to y'all

Well, I have to make a comment or two. I've enjoyed this discussion and have to tell everybody that the last time that I wore anything formal was at our wedding 44 years ago this August. Hadn't even owned a suit or sportcoat since 1976 when we moved to Hawaii, until we went on our first cruise for our 30th anniversary in 1992. I dressed in a suit then. Last year I bought a Tux for our 11 day cruise on the Mercury and to quote my wife, when people commented on how happy we looked in our pictures - "we felt pretty that night!" Loved dressing up - I bought 3 different cummerbund and tie sets and the wife and I coordinated our color schemes for all 3 formal nights. We had a ball and I am looking forward to our 14 day Panama Canal transit next year to "look pretty" again (and feel that way too)!!! If you can picture a 67 year old, not too slim or agile James Bond you'll get an idea of how I thought I looked (and my wife put those Bond girls to shame) - LOL![]()
