Char, you might be surprised. With the larger cabins, extra amenities, and freebies that you pay for on other lines, the specials might be worth it. I am keeping a close track on a few of them (Regent and Crystal)

If the cruise lines does not manage to fill up their ships some are bound to go bankrupt.

I read this artickle in Cruise buissness news today:

The current recession may lead to bankruptcies of some cruise lines, a senior shipbroking source has warned. However, major companies should not face difficulties.
The situation of major operators, such as Carnival Corporation & PLC, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd and MSC Cruises, does not give reason to concern, but there are smaller companies in the industry that may not survive the current conditions, said Jean-Bernard Raoust, head of Barry Rogliano Salles in Paris.
He told Cruise Business Online that he did not want to disclose the names of any of the companies that might be in danger, but pointed out that the failure of the planned re-launch of Orient Lines shows that the recession is hurting the cruise industry as well.
If newbuilding orders will not be placed for a long time, the future of shipyards, equipment suppliers and contractors plus other businesses linked to this will start to deteriorate as well, he pointed out.

Sounds just like the auto industry. People not buying cars is having ramifications far beyond the big three.
