Am I too old to start a career on a ship?

    Hey everyone,
I'm 51 years old and considering working on a cruise line. thinking maybe guest services. i have many years of customer service from my own home repair business and 15 years experience supervising others and all the responsibilities that go with that.

Will my age be a factor?

    Rick

I think you might have a problem going in at the bottom, but you might manage to get in at middle management level. It's worth a try.

    Hi Ricochet,

I think it may be difficult to get into the Purser department - they have pretty stringent requirements, normally requesting you speak at least one other language and have hospitality and tourism experience. They very very rarely take for middle management roles without other Purser experience so you would be going in at the bottom.

What might be a really good area for you though is the Gift shop - they are always looking for people with great customer service and don't have quite the same requirements.

Here are two companies who manage staffing for that area www.starboardcruise.com

    Harding Brothers recruitment page.

    Good luck!

    Thanks

The gift shop sales is a possibility. I really wanted to grow to a senior position. It seems the lines prefer to promote from within. What about a HR crew administrator?

the long hours don't concern me. The shared room may be a hassle since I'm old enough to be some of the crew's father. I'd also look forward to be working around so many positive people. I strive to be positive and cheerful every day. I'm also not afraid of hard work.

Yep! Crew administrator might be a good option too! And to be honest the hours are't normally as long as the Pursers too.

    Applying

I've been applying for jobs directly to the cruise lines. Would I have a better chance if i apply through their hiring partners?

Yes - I never got a response from the companies directlybut went with an agency that specifically works with Australians. They were great and got me through the process as quickly as possible. Still took about 9 months though!
