I know I said to keep these to 7-night cruises and I hate to break my own rules, but this was a special I saw that was really amazing;

Carnival Elation - Mexican Riviera - 1/18/10 - 6-nights - $189!!!

Okay, 6 nights in a Day's Inn in the middle of nowhere and eating at McDonalds in order to keep my price down to $30 a day per person, or taking a 6-night cruise. Gee, now's there a tough decision!

But it is the Elation.........

(Mexican cruise, older smaller ship, bad economy. It is a perfect storm)

I look at it this way - a cruise is a cruise!

And absolutely nothing wrong with Mexico - wouldn't hesitate in a heartbeat to take this cruise if we lived on the West Coast.

Yeah, it's a smaller older ship, but for me a cruise on any ship beats staying at home thinking about it.

My hubby was looking at the prices in the Princess mailing we got the other day and sighed because we can't avail ourselves of those specials. I can't quote the rates as the item is in our recycling bin now.

Even when he's ready for a cruising vacation, it'll have to be when our girl is out on school break, so the prices will definitely be higher.

I know, we would love to go right now but Deb is still not working. And as soon as she starts working, we won't have time for a cruise! Sigh!

Off subject a little, but cannot help but reply. Once got a Princess mailing and called the day I received it. I was told the prices are not available any longer. Just a come on. I had them remove me from their mailing list.

I understand an online price can go fast, but a mailing should be honored for a while.

I hear what you're saying!

Unfortunately, most cruise specials are capacity controlled just like the airlines and once they're gone, they're gone.

I was once online booking an airfare for 4 clients. After booking the first two at one rate, I went back to immediately book the next two and the rate increased significantly. I called the airline and I had just booked the last two seats at the special rate.

I've had the exact same thing happen when booking a cruise.

Usually, in the very fine print, you'll see a comment about the special being limited. Not really a 'come on' or 'bait and switch' as some people call it, but it can be very frustrating. But that's why it's always best to work with an agent because they will often find out about the specials before the mailings, so they are more likely to get the rates before being advertised to the masses.

I know I had called once about a cruise I had already booked and wanted to find out more info about an amenity listed in a Captain's Circle Quarterly (Princess). In fact, it was listed twice in the publication. I read all of the ifne print on those pages. The CSR didn't know anything about it, put me on hold for a while and came back on line, saying no onein promotion knew anything about it, even though I gave her the exact info on where I found it. I mailed in a copy, actually twice because I didn't get a reply in a month or two. Then emailed a couple of times. Finally was told it was capacity controlled. They did "relent" and leave me the coupons for the items in my cabin. But it just made me wonder since there was no limitations mentioned in the fine print.
