One nice thing about most cruiselines is that smoking is no longer allowed in the dining rooms. It wasn't like that when I first started cruising in the mid-90s. We were considering going on a Royal Caribbean cruise, but the fact that they had smoking and no smoking sections in the dining room on that ship was a real deal breaker for us.
Another nicety is that the cabin stewards know how to clean the cabins thoroughly in between cruises. Have never gone into a cabin that first day and smell tobacco smell (and believe me, I would smell it).
We don't book balconies and I guess we won't unless we're on a ship that bans smoking on balconies (and if hubby doesn't mind paying extra for that type of cabin).
One ship I would advise you to stay away from is the Island Princess. I didn't care for the layout of the grand atrium. On the Promenade deck, right on the grand atrium, is the cigar lounge and a martini bar that allows smoking on one side. The non-smoking part of that bar is between those two.
