We book a balcony every cruise. But on one cruise I was just above and upstream from 2 cigar smokers. It seemed like they spent the whole cruise on their balcony puffing away. It did not sour me on booking another balcony, but we did not get the full benefit we normally do from our balcony. I agree with all the above posts, but wanted to add this.

I have to agree with Sue Miller and Cruise Planner. You don't know how many stars there are until you can casually watch them from your private balcony. When doing an Alaskan cruise, it's a must; otherwise, you'll be fighting everyone else for the railing, and nobody will give up their seats in the buffet if they are by a window (true on other cruises). My husband is ex-Navy, and he loves to sit out on the balcony at night with his binoculars, watching for passing ships or lights on shore. Depending on the sun, it's also a good place to take in the sun without fighting for a lounge chair. As far as cost, we found that we can get a military discount on Carnival with just honorable discharge papers. Others require that you be retired military or currently serving. The military discount help to pay for the upgrade to balcony. We love the balcony!

We have done both inside and out. If you are going thru the Panama Canal or are at sea for more than 2 days at a time, a Balcony is a must. Otherwise, if you are in ports every day, take the inside deal. We did love our window tho on our recent 8-day Mexican Riviera cruise as it got cold and windy for 2 days and we stayed at our window while sailing and saw breaching whales!!!
