Which would you choose, and why?
Sheila, if I just had to go on this cruise and those were my only two choices, then this cruise is one I would not have to go on, I'll change my mind. It's balcony or nothing, period.

If that were the choice, I would say:
Is there a SIZE difference between the 2 cabins?
What are the LOCATIONS of 2 Cabins?
Is there a PRICE difference between the 2 cabins?

I would take the Larger cabin. If the same size, I would opt for the best location. After that, the better price. If everything was the same, I think I would study the deckplans, try to figure out what the obstruction would be, but in the end probably still go for the obstructed view.

As you can see, I spend a LOT of time picking out cabins.

So CM, what cruise do you have to go on?

Char, it's probably because I am afraid of screwing up! Left over from being raised by a perfectionist.

Fortunately, DH appreciates all of it.

MC -
Actually, the question wasn't percipitated by any particular cruise that I am considering. It was just an idle thought . . and I wondered what others would think about it.

We do obstructed view quite often on the Sovereign. The price is right, and there's just TOO wide a difference between OV and Balcony on that ship. Not worth the extra $$ for a 3-4 night cruise to somewhere we've been over a dozen times, IMO.

Well, it was just a thought. I thought there was a cruise I should know about!

The price difference between the balconies and OVs on Sovereign is because 1- there are not many of them, and 2- don't you have to go up to a JS to get one?

We don't always get a balcony either. When it's just me, I just want enough room to store stuff and to sit down. When I travel with DH, we get a bigger room when we can't get a balcony. That's why I started with room size in my post above.

That's correct.
They are all retrofits, too.

I've only actually set foot on one of them (The Grand Suite), but they seem to have done a real nice job of retrofitting them.

(No - we DIDN'T book the GS - we were invited to a Christmas Party there in 2005.)

Ok, I can very much understand that logic, Sheila.

This is a tough one, I love my balconies and the sound and smell of the ocean.

Guess I would have to pick the obstructed view. The window, even though obstructed, would still have to have more of a view than the porthole. Also, more light...love the morning light. I am not a late sleeper and I like to have a bright, natural light room in which to get dressed.

Don't care for the lower decks either and the portholes are usually way to low for me.
