I think it depends on your cruise line.

The Pier closer to town was hit worse than the one further south. Depending which one your ship or cruise line normally uses, you may still be tendering.

Here is a map showing the 3 piers used by cruise ships:
http://travelnotes.cc/cruise/cozumel.php

Here is a page from the local paper Cozumel Insider, showing which ships are in this week, which piers they will use and whether they will tender or be anchored (fondeo means anchorage), I am guessing at the pier.

We were just there last week no ships are docked at the port! They anchor out a little ways and the tenders take you in. They may be referring to the order in which they anchor(line up?) But the piers are definetly not ready yet. Don't hesitate to get off the ship it's not a long ride in and the people of cozumel have wroked hard and done a great job of having things open.

Received an email from Carnival yesterday stating that the dolphin excursion that I booked for Cozumel has been cancelled. Evidently there is still lots to be done there.

I was sooooo looking forward to it.

We returned from a cruise last week, 2/4! Met many folks from an RCCL ship in Costa Maya who would be in Cozumel the next day. They were told they would be using TENDERS in Cozumel.

But can't they have the dolphin's pitch in and help with the repairs?

The cruise ships are all doing tenders. As of last week. And there are no signs of the piers being done anytime soon. As for the Dolphin swim, It is still under construction. We did the Playa Mia Beach Break. A lot of fun. Food, Drinks(like pop and daquirries avail.), music, contests, beach chairs, unbrellas, showers, flush baths, water trampoline and an iceberg to climb. A lot of fun.

RUMORS and wrong information abounds...

Gee whiz, if you don't have the facts, please don't guess. Folks are depending on accurate information.

We were on Cozumel on January 13, 2006 and my son just returned from there on February 9, 2006.

There are no docks for cruise ships! I repeat, there are no docks for cruise ships! In fact, construction is just now getting underway on two of the three destroyed cruise ship docks...It will be late September at earliest, according to the port police working the tender dock.

However, there is space for smaller boats to dock, and the Mexican folks are doing a wonderful job with tendering. The cruise ships anchor in three areas near where the old docks were located. It is a short tender ride to the tender docks. They are using party boats, inter-island boats, regular tender boats supplemented by cruise ship lifeboats to get people moved. We thought it was quite smooth.

We have been to Cozumel four times, and the visit in Janaury 2006 was our favorite, Wilma damage or not!

The information I got when we were in Cozumel last week was that the Mexican Government will not be subsidizing the repairs of the docks and that they have no date set as to when they will be repaired. The funds will have to come from Cozumel so it might take a while.
