    Tulum pictures

The Tulum Mayan ruins are a spectacular example of what existed in the new world before the Europeans came. While only a shadow of their former majesty, the ruins are still awe inspiring. When you approach the ruins, you are initially surrounded by a contemporary bazaar in which you can purchase trinkets, souvenirs, and virtually anything else. Don't let it turn you away because the actual ruins are marvelous. First you go down a path that takes you to the water with a fork that takes you to the ruins. Many locals use the beaches beneath the ruins. No wonder, they are very nice beaches. But, moving down the path.....

You see the walls in front of you but you have to enter through a very narrow gate.

Then you are inside. The ruins are just the rockwork of some of the larger buildings, but you can tell how impressive they were in the 15th century.

    Thanks for the pictures, Neal!

Was that the ruins that also had the option of going to the beach?

Yes, and some people did. It was an all day excursion that left as soon as the ship cleared and got back right before it was ready to take off. We went shopping for the first hour while some people went directly to the beach. As you can see, it is a very nice beach area.

It was kind of weird, lots of tourist carrying cameras going to the ruins. A lot of locals were also there in skimpy bathing suits (both the guys and the gals)

Neal .... So the beach was the one shown in your first two photos? It looks pretty!

Was it extra to include the beach a part of the tour? Could you just go to the beach and NOT the ruins?

Yes, that was the beach below the ruins.

If I remember, the beach plus ruins was more expensive, but I am not sure about that.

Interesting question about skipping out from the ruins and going directly to the beach. It would have been very easy to slip away from the ruins but it would have meant missing out on some of them. As it was we barely had time to really see them- it would have meant a very short time in the water.

We went to Tulum once and loved it. I have some great photos around, have to share them too (once I find them).

You have me thinking about doing a Myan trip again... We saw a few sightseeing / beach tours that interested us.

Feel free to post the pictures, Dan. The more the better and I want to get your perspective of what was interesting.
