Cozumel - piers

I am aware that many piers were wiped out last year by the devasting hurricanes.

How many have been rebuilt? How many ships are able to dock? Has the one at Puerta Lagonsta (?) - the one that was within walking distance of town - been rebuilt?

Thanks

Wilma hit in 2005 - a very bad year for hurricanes.

2 of the 3 cruise ship piers are operational. 4 ships can dock at once.

Puenta Langosta was the least damaged of the lot, is and has been fully functional and is within crawling distance of numerous bars.

Some pictures are here (from 2006):

It is also the pier featured in the Cozumel Insider webcam page:

Puerto Maya is the pier that Carnival owned that had all the shops right there at the pier. It is still being rebuilt and will take several more months (Fall 2008).

The International Pier is the one that RCCL owns and is close to Puerto Maya.

Punta Langosta is an independent pier that lots of cruise lines use. I have to admit, we have gotten SPOILED by Punta Langosta. It is so nice and convenient...I almost hate to see the Puerto Maya open back up. (because that means we have to pay to go into town again)

We docked at Punta Longosta in January, 2008. We really enjoyed that location. We were able to shop, go back to the ship for lunch, and go out again. I read that Puerta Maya Pier will reopen on October 16, 2008. How far is this pier from downtown? Is it in walking distance, say in 10 or 15 minutes. Most articles I have read said you would need a taxi. If this is so, please give me an idea of taxi fares. We will sail in January, 2009. Can't wait.

How far is "not very far"? Walking distance or short cab ride? Do you know the taxi rate?

You definitely won't be walking - it's quite a distance (couple of miles) and is about a $10 taxi ride into town. Of course, you can always rent a scooter and have some real fun!
