Dolphin Encounter - Cozumel

did the dolphin encounter just last week. you get taxi trip to park and entrance to the park. Once you get there, you get a short talk about dplphins and instructions, they issue you a life jacket and you go out to the pens where the dolphins are kept. You get led to a stairway that end on a steel grate platform about 3 feet underwater. You'll be standing on this for the duration on the encounter, so wear something on your feet that you can get wet and will protect your feet. You will be introduced to the dolphin, get to pet her, give her a kiss and she kisses you, and shake hands/fins. Water time lasts about 45 minutes. You can buy pictures and a video of your encounter. Afterward you can stay in the park and see the birds, gardens and swim in the lagoon. Tour personel will give you a voucher for a taxi ride back to the docks.

Thanks, Paul!! Great information!!!

My Signature Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to know why I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved.

I did this encounter a few years and was prettyy much as Spence described but a word of caution. I am only 5 ft tall and the water is about 4 ft. The distance from the back of the platform is about 4 feet to the edge. In order not to float away I had to keep holding on to the chain link fence, but with the chain link fence so far back I could not see the dolphins well. When it was my turn to pet the dolphin the man standing next to me that I did not know had to hold on to my life vest so I could stand there to see the dolphin. I have done the encounter/swim with the dolphins several times in Waikaloa Hawaii and always had a wonderful experience. This for the money was terrible. It just was not a good experence for me. We are doing the Mexican Riviera on the Oosterdam in just 6 weeks and I have already booked the "Swim" with the dolphins which is suppose to be totally different so we shall see. This will be in Puerto Vallarta, I will report back and let you all know how it went.

what do you think of this for kids?

Old 08-27-2005, 11:10 AM laffnvegas is offline     #9 (permalink)
I think it is great for kids if parents are there with them. Like I said before the water comes up fairly high. I would of been fine if they did not make you wear the life vest. With wearing the life vest you just float away like a bobber. There were several kids with our group and the parents (lucky they were tall) were holding on to their kids life jackets. There was probably 15 of us on the platform and I was toward the end. At the other end was a teenager about my height having the same problem. I will be doing the Swim in P.V. and they also do an encounter one. I will check out their Encounter one and report if they do it any differently.
