We took an excursion from the ship at Puntarenas and were happy with it. Others on the ship arranged for a group to go ziplining from an outside vendor and it was very well run. At least in this port, you can do an outside excurision without worrying. There are well run companies who have English guides and who understand that you can not miss the ship. Start with one of the companies listed above, so that you will know what is generally available.

Keep in mind that the roads are very bumpy, because there is seismic activity all the time. Nothing bad enough to be dangerous, but active enough that there isn't time to repair the roads before they are fractured again.
