Costa Cruises inaugurated the new passenger port in St Petersburg, Russia earlier this month. The Costa Mediterranea (85,600 gross tons; 2,114 double occupancy) was the first ship to call on the port, which was built to accommodate cruise ships and their guests with a mixed public and private investment worth a total of $13 billion. Captain Anelito Montesarchio was the first person to disembark from the ship and was welcomed by the Governor of St Petersburg, Valentina Matvienko. This new port will certainly be a great addition to the city since the current port was primarily geared towards industrial and cargo ships.
