Just returned from Western Caribbean on Norwegian Sun. I found paradise! A little town called Majahual at Costa Maya.
The port at Costa Maya can only dock 2 to 3 ships at a time so it doesnt get too crowded. The port has a wonderful plaza with shopping, bars, and swimming pools. You can spend the day there. Very nice, clean, and new. I wouldnt bother with booking a ship excursion because this place is so nice on your own.
If you want to get away and enjoy a little costal town take a taxi three miles ($3.00 each way) to Majahual. You can also rent golf carts at the port and do it on your own.
The town has one sandy road along the beach front and crystal clear blue caribbean waters. It has bars along the beach , water activities, vendors, and music. You can get a forty minute massage on the beach for $20.00. Beers are $2.00. This place was it for me.
I love Costa Maya as well, that little town is a gem. I was buying modelo by the 6 pack for like 2 bucks.. It just seemed like a very laid back kinds place. I even took my laydown chair and stuck in the ocean water and sat with the waves washing over me.
When we were there, there were soldiers doing some type of exercise in the water.
I know we aren't supposed to take pictures of soldiers in foreign places but I did anywa. They had several boats out in the water and then brought them in and loaded them and the soldiers up.
Just a note to all. If you buy a hammock chair make sure you check it with your luggage or they will take it from you. I lost my hammock chair at the gate. They wouldn't let it on the plane. So make sure to check it.

Wow, I thought I was the only one that liked Costa Maya. Next time you go there I highly recommend seeing the ruins with Ivan & David it was a wonderful tour http://www.chacchobenruins.com/
We also went to Chacchoben ruins. We took a ship's excursion because our itinerary got changed a month before we sailed, and we didn't have time to find a private company.
The cool thing about these ruins is that parts of it is a dig in process. You can see some of the markings by the archeologist. Also you can go back in a year or two and see new things that had not been uncovered on your last visit.

Costa Maya is growing up fast. The first tie we were there a few years ago there was not much other than the little shopping area and the ship tours. When wee were there last year a number of outside vendors have set up offerings.
