We booked a cruise just for this port but Hurrican Dean stopped us from going. I still think of the devastation that this area had and the rebuilding efforts are looking good.
I now have another cruise booked that will have a stop here. I hope all goes well. From what I have been reading they are saying not everything will be open by the end of the year that it might have to be set back a month or so. Is anyone reading anything different? I hope I am wrong.
I feel almost selfish in my wish to visit this port. I really liked the quaintiness of the village it was from before pictures.

We received notification from Carnival that our ship (Carnival Legend 11/2/08) will be stopping at Costa Maya. There is not way to book any kind of excursions as of yet - I understand that they will start taking them again in late Sept. We are looking forward to some bus ride to some ruins...I understand that the reefs and sea life took a beating...
I know thats like eternity from now, but I will stay on top of this thread.
Zy is going there... before then, I think. (Hope I'm not mixed up on that)
But if you want info on the condition of the reefs, I imagine we'll be getting a FULL report on that - complete with pictures - on Zy's return.
My visit isn't until Christmas but I do have a Catamaran sail and snorkel booked and I do plan on checking out as much of the area as possible, including Chac-Chi.
I am disappointed that Disney cancelled their scheduled stops there in the September/October time frame.
Now I think Holland America is the first scheduled to stop there in mid to late October.
You can see the kind of tours NCL is offering and I imagine Carnival will be similar (but perhaps higher priced!):
Ah . . . I didn't realize Disney had cancelled those calls. Darned!
Hopefully, nothing will happen to cause HAL to have to alter their itinerary.
The folks in the area really NEED this revenue source to resume sooner rather than later. They've already suffered a very prolonged interruption in income and total disruption of their lives.
The first ship is scheduled in port on 10/31. We will be there the following week on Carnival Legend. The town - Majahaul - is a ways from the port - within walking distance if you are in shape. Otherwise, take a cab or bus. The town has been rebuilt; the boardwalk has been refurbished and the trees are starting to look good again. The dock - where the ship will drop cruisers off - is different than Majahaul. I have received word from a wonderful woman that works in Majahaul that the reefs took a beating, but not as bad as initially reported. She says watching the new growth is amazing! Bugs are an issue if you get too far away fromt he beach area - take bugspray. Not everything is open, but the residents are ready for the tourists to come back. Water in MAJAHAUL is safe to drink.
