There is talk that they might build a tender pier while the regular pier is being rebuild, but obviously the infrastructure for the permanent residents needs to be rebuilt, first.

I noticed your countdown clock says you are going on a "hurricane cruise" in 8 days.
Let's hope it turns to be only a cruise during hurricane season... and not an acutal hurricane cruise!
We don't need damage to another port like that which occurred at Costa Maya . . . nor do we want any more of our Caribbean friends left homeless. Plus - we want YOU to be safe and your cruise to be pleasant!
Actually it's my Katrina anniversary cruise, and come hell or high water, New Orleans will survive cruise. I've cruised around hurricanes before and know the cruise lines avoid them. Actually kind of interesting - they post satellite shots in public areas letting you know that they are keeping an eye on the storm (and also perhaps the purser's desk gets weary of answering the same questions over and over).
I like a little rough water once in a while, but know not everyone else does.
I will bet you money I have gotten as much in my Grand Marquis as they did in that SUV! (I KNOW I've gotten more in it than we had in the Explorer or Excursion or whatever that was in May)
The small school in Majahaul -- does anyone have information on how it faired?

Lulu, from what I am gathering from the links above, the school is still intact. It seems that it was used as a shelter during Dean, and now the Army is using it as a distribution center for supplies and a place to make meals for the people in the area.
I am sure that they need to inspect it before they use it again as any kind of public facility, but right now they can use it as a staging area.
