Exclamation 3 Crewmembers Killed Aboard Costa Europa

3 Crewmembers Killed Aboard Costa Europa

The Costa Europa has struck a pier as it docked at an Egyptian Red Sea resort in high winds. Three crewmembers have been killed in the accident.

The vessel's starboard side struck the pier at about 4:45 a.m. Egypt time. The Costa Europa ship had been on an 18-day cruise from Dubai to Savona and had 1,437 guests on board, mostly from Italy. Almost all of the passengers has been taken off the ship and are being put up in hotels in the region while they await to return home.

The high winds and blows to the side of the ship have ripped a 6 foot wide hole in her body, according to reports.

    O, geeze.
Their families must be beside themselves... what a tragedy. I know all Cruise Line Fans are saddened to hear this. Crewmembers are such special people.

This is horrible. God bless those crew members and their families
Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to know why I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved.

What a terrible tragedy! Prayers to the families of the crew members.

Winds can really play havoc when a ship is close in to a pier as evidenced by several occasions reported on Cruiselinefans in the past year. I remember the gangway collapsing on a Disney ship in Port Canaveral and a Cunard ship (I'm not sure which port) also had a collapsing gangway due to high winds.

The picture above looks like the ship is listing to the port side.

Those winds can cause plenty havoc, both to ships and aircraft taking off and landing.
Very unfortunate to lose three crew members.

    This is horrible news

I am guessing they are making her list to port to raise the damage on the starboard side, but that's just a guess.

Char, QM2 was blown away from the side in Zeebrugge last year (whilst I was on board) breaking about 8 ropes in the process. The Gangway ended up hanging off the side of the ship and touching the bottom of the dock. They had to make QM2 list to port to raise the starboard side so they could get the gangway back.
