The Italian cruise line Costa Cruises has celebrated its millionth booking with a lavish event held at the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa.

The millionth customer who made the booking was from the Italian city of Brescia and made guest of honour at the function which had more than 300 guests, including travel agents, local authorities, media and Costa management.

The travel agent Luca Signori who made the millionth booking for the cruise line was rewarded a free cruise of their choice for his family as well.

Pier Luigi Foschi, CEO and Chairman of Costa Cruises said that this milestone had been a goal for the company as its 60th anniversary draws near.

Costa Cruises recorded solid sales for the northern hemisphere summer with bookings having jumped 26 per cent between the three months of June, July and August when compared with the same period for the previous year.

Foschi also spoke about the order of three new ships and hopes that this will help Costa Cruises reach 1.5 million passengers by 2010.
