Dutch salvage company Smit Tak has begun pumping fuel oil from the Costa Concordia cruise ship that capsized on Friday evening off the Italian coast.

Ten Smit Tak experts have been sent to the site to carry out the operation together with a local company. The teams will begin by cleaning up the oil that has been leaking from the ship. The experts will also evaluate the vessel’s stability.

Once the search for survivors and corpses has been completed, the team will begin pumping thousands of tons of fuel from the ship’s tanks in order to prevent an environmental disaster.
Smit Tak has also offered to salvage the entire ship but has yet to reach agreement with the Italian government.
