It is mind boggling that this would happen to such a modern ship.

There are reports that some people jumped into the cold sea water.

From Carnival Cruise Lines website: Our thoughts are with the guests and crew of the Costa Concordia. We are keeping them in our hearts in the wake of this very sad event.

For those who did not know, Carnival Cruise Lines owns Costa Cruise Lines as well as Princess, Holland America, Cunard, and Seabourn and other lines.

Yes, it's fairly new, it entered service in 2006, almost 6 years ago this year. The only time I've seen the Costa Concordia was when we visited Gibraltar in November, 2009. She was docked in port that day and we saw her depart at 1 pm that afternoon. They will raise her, and she will be back in service maybe at the end of the year or next year. She has a 165 ft gash in her hull from striking the reef according to reports I've read.
