Hi, there, everyone. I went to a meet and greet last week in Wilmington, DE, (Anne was in Ohio) for our upcoming Equinox TA from Rome in 2009. It was interesting was how many of your names were brought up. I can't remember who mentioned who, but there were folks who had at least met Bob and Garry, Joanie and George, Karyn, Bill and Marilynn, Bob and Astrid, and UK Phil. It was very interesting to make new friends with whom we share older friends.

Have a happy Fourth folks.
Rick

No, didn't disappear in the Windsor tornado. No, didn't get swept away by the incredible flows in our rivers this year. Just got stuck in "non-vacation" mode for far too long. Last year, Pentax was sold to a glass company called Hoya in Japan. Now, Hoya has sold our little piece of the business to Brother. It's been an interesting ride.

Been a good while since I've checked in. Will have to wander through some of the more recent posts and figure out who's making this particular trip. Will see those of you who are staying at the Continental, as we'll be arriving sometime the morning of the 7th.

Before I start trying to read another 23 pages of pre-cruise epic -- is there anyone else among our group that is interested in Geocaching? If so, be advised that I plan to knock out a couple in the area of the Hotel on the 7th and 8th. Specifically, I'd like to see (and of course, discover caches at) GC16MYZ (the Palau de la Musica Catalana), GC16N25 (the Arc del Triomf), and perhaps GC17A24 down in the touristy area of Port Vell. If you just want to walk along, don't bother to bring your GPSr since I'll have mine along.

Does anyone know where the ship will be docked? There's a fair bit of waterfront w/piers down there.

Well my goodness!! Chris, it's certainly nice to hear from you. I'm sorry you've had such a stressful time at work. It sounds like you'll be ready for a cruise. By the way, what is geocaching?

It's where a bunch of nutcases like me employ billions of dollars worth of government launched satellite equipment in a search for Tupperware. Now wasn't that a helpful explanation?

I'd say "seriously", but there are only a few "serious" players in this game, there are over 610,000 geocaches that have been placed around the world. A geocache could be anything from a container as small as a pencil eraser to as big as a 5 gallon can. Each contains a log, and each is registered in a single worldwide database at Geocaching - The Official Global GPS Cache Hunt Site. The "owner" provides some relative information about the difficulty-to-find and the terrain, a description, and the location in latitude and longitude. Each cache is then "stamped" with a unique designator to identify it. The hope is that others who enjoy getting out and about will find these caches using a portable GPS unit, log them both physically at the site and electronically at geocaching.com, and if the cache is big enough, perhaps swap a few items (I like to leave behind Coleman camping bits and pieces) and move on to the next.

There are several just down the road from you, and a whole pile of them up in Hendersonville. Some are pointless -- 35mm film canisters stashed under the skirts of the lights in a Home Depot parking lot -- and some are outstanding -- one of my targets is at the Palau de la Musica Catalana in Barcelona (on my "must see" list while I'm there). Could be high up on what could barely be called a trail in the Rockies, or in front of the local Walgreen's store. Ideally, they're to take people to interesting places they might not otherwise visit.

Try this:

Click on this --> Geocaching - The Official Global GPS Cache Hunt Site
Put in your zip code (28731) in the upper right corner and click on the arrow at its right
Click on the "Map It" icon in the upper right corner

Amazing ... every one of those icons is a cache near you. So far, I've found over 700 of the silly things!

Best way i can descrbe it is to show the location on Google map Aerial photo - thn you can zoom out. Look here:
Google Maps

Start with the image above and zoom out to get a perspective. The spot marked with the "A" bubble is the Columbus Monument at the foot of Las Ramblas, not really walking distance from the pier, can't even remember if you can see it from there. It would be in sight distance wise, but might not have a line of sight. At least that is where the Millie was last year - along with some RCCL ship.

For those of you who sent the wishes on the Owl board - thank you.
