My mother quit back in the 50s when she starting having us kids. Probably just did it cold turkey (but without the booze) because she has great will power. My father stuck with cigars, didn't really quit until he ended up in post-stroke care the last couple years of his life. The ironic thing is that he was a physician with a specialization in diseases of the lung (as well as his work for the State of California). When I was a kid, I would listen to him dictating reports about patients, and noticed that just about each one with a lung disease was a smoker. That kept me from ever wanting to try a cigarette.

People who I've known who have successfully quit, traded that habit for being more active (exercising, etc.) because now they can work out without feeling huffy and out of breath.

    Jul,
I commend you for what you are doing. My parents were smokers back when it was the "cool" thing to do (both gave it up cold turkey in the 50's) but I have always been against smoking and have never done so. My kids, on the other hand, as an act of rebellion got started and both have been unable to stop (That will teach their parents who knows best.... )

Anyway nicotine is a vile drug worse than cocaine and heroin when it comes to quitting (according to my son). I wish you the best of luck and if their is any thing I can do in the way of encouragement for what you are doing - just say so!

Thanks for all the encouragement everyone. Couple more days to my quit day. No side effects yet. However I go on the stronger pills from tomorrow. They already taste a little less satisfactory and the cravings are not as strong. Hopefully no-one in my family will lose their life nor limb over the next few weeks

Thank you. Maybe I'll need someone to yell at next week. I'll do that by typing in capitals

Jul, I hope you are taking these pills under the supervision of your doctor.
My doctor told me I cant take those pills because they can give you a heart attack and since I am on meds for high BP those pills are a no no for me.
Quitting smoking must be great but not at any cost.
