My son and I will be on board, our first transatlantic. Really looking forward to it, hoping we picked the right cabin.

What were you looking for in your pick?

I am bothered by sea sickness in very rough water, so got a mid deck cabin, should have got one lower deck but did not think of that until later. Also, hoping to be able to use the balcony. No control over weather & how rough the seas are, but I did read that on an eastbound transatlantic, being on the starboard side gives more exposure to sun. So switched cabins to be on the starboard side, unfortunately none midship by this point except by going up a deck.

So I don't know if I have traded a little more sun & warmth for being a little more sea sick! I am hoping not, but I guess we will see. I will bring dramamine, patches, & ginger capsules. The bands have never done a thing for me as far as I could tell, so probably will not bother with them.

The only times I have been sea sick was on my first cruise, way way up in the front of the ship, going past Cabo San Lucas. Very rough water, going very fast. I might as well have been riding the maliboomer at disney california adventure. The second time, going through a tropical storm & even the crew were sick. Still, we may hit rough water so I'm hoping my cabin choice won't contribute to feeling yuckier than I need to be.

I don't think going up a single deck will make you miserable enough to regret the sun you will be enjoying from your balcony. We live in a desert and have no trouble riding on the port side during an eastern cruise, but I can appreciate how much it means to someone who enjoys the sun.

Hopefully, we won't have rough seas. I've only crossed the North Atlantic and only remember one really rough night, and that was our second night out from New York, and that did turn a few gills green. On a westbound TA I don't remember any rough weather at all.

But I have been told that the southern route that we are taking is less likely to provide high seas and bad weather, so you will probably get lots of healthy time to enjoy the balcony, and won't need a lower cabin.

On the other hand, I had been told by other cruisers who suffer far more than I ever did from seasickness, that I should start taking the dramamine a couple of days before the cruise. I had done that prior to the rough crossing out of New York and felt terrific. I actually enjoyed the sensations produced by the waves and the wind.

So if you were planning on using dramamine, you might want to start a couple of days before we embark.

Thanks Susan, that is reassuring. I'm really looking forward to this cruise, many firsts for us. First cruise longer than a week, first time on Celebrity, first time to Europe.

I've been trying to pull up shore excursions for madeira, but so far none are available for this cruise. Seems odd. I found a site that listed 2 other cruise ships in port with us on May 3, so I imagine the place will be fairly inundated with cruise ship passengers.

I'm Jackie, btw. I'm new to this board but have been reading cruise critic a while. ......love what I see here so far. Friendly, well informed people & none of the egos & put downs I see on some other boards. Nice change.

    Hi nu2sea,
I am also going on this cruise. Hi Jackie. We've e mailed before. I'm Ricki. This is our 3rd TA and it could be rough, you never know. We're on deck 11, also not such a good choice, but dramamine, bonine (less drowsy) works well.
We've been to Madeira before and took a cab from the pier. It was great. Can wait to leave
