Summit to offer cruises out of Bayonne

Celebrity Cruises is introducing next year a new array of seven-night voyages departing on Sundays from Cape Liberty (Bayonne), New Jersey. Several longer voyages are available at the end of the season. The cruises will be offered on the 2,038-guestCelebrity Summit. Since 2005, Celebrity Summit’s sister ship, Celebrity Constellation, sailed the line’s Canada/New England voyages.
From April to mid-June, Celebrity Summit will sail seven-night Bermuda and Bermuda/New England voyages. The Bermuda sailings feature three days and two nights in King’s Wharf. Though the Bermuda/New England sailings vary by sailing date, they include two days and one night in King’s Wharf, as well as visits to Newport, Rhode Island, and Boston, Massachusetts. The season marks the first time Celebrity Cruises has visited Bermuda since 2006.Celebrity’s first-ever seven-night Canada/New England sailings will take place throughout July and August. The itinerary includes stops in Saint John, New Brunswick and Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Portland and Bar Harbor, Maine.
In September and October, Celebrity also will offer its standard 14-night cruises in the region, offering an overnight stay in Quebec City, Quebec, as well as visits to Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

    Question

How would you compare this NJ cruise port to Fort Lauderdale or Miami to board for a cruise? Second, how close are the hotel's to this cruise port and third, are there many hotel in NJ that offer free shuttle to the cruise port. Fourth, what is nearest airport to this cruise port?

The nearest airport is Newark (EWR).

I'm hoping someone who has sailed from Bayonne will be able to help with the other questions.

I sailed out of Bayonne twice.

    Simple.

I personally got a little late, but has parking right next to the pier and offers a shuttle from lot to pier.

It went fairly smooth, from parking to ship I would say no more then an hour... But once again both times we were after the main times people are there because we are local and drove.

In addition to EWR, JFK, ang LGA is also close, however I would only recommend EWR as it is minutes away.

As for hotel, I do not know any personally, however it is only 10 miles from EWR there has to be a good hotel right in between, not sure if any offer shuttle service..

Also a side note, Newark, and area can be pretty bad so be careful. There is a museum a few minutes away also so if you got kids they will love it.. It is one of those learning science museums..

I will look into the hotel thing. Also I will be doing one of these cruises, no questions.

As a travel agent from NJ, I can offer some advise here.

The port of Bayonne is definitely not like Miami or Fort Lauderdale. I believe it was a former navy yard that RCI bought rights to. It is small and just off an urban/residental area.

The closest airport is Newark (about 20 minutes). It is accessible to both JFK and LaGuardia but since you need to get thru Manhattan to get to the port, it could be an hour or more drive to get from the airport to the pier.

Hotels- there are none in Bayonne (if there were, I probably wouldn't recommend them). There is a nice Hyatt in Jersey City's business district- about 15 minutes away. The best bet for choices of hotels is back at the airport. There is a nice Sheraton, Marriott, Doubletree, Radisson and more with restuarants, fitness centers, etc. Please keep in mind that there is nothing to do at the airport hotels but if you just need a place to stay before the cruise- it will be the most convenient. Most of the hotels have shuttles ot shopping malls or to the train station, where you can easily get into Manhattan.

I am personally thrilled that the Summit is coming to Bayonne. In my opinion, it will be the best ship sailing the 7 nite itinerary. When I was part of the other cruise forum, I was organizing an "official" group on the Summit for Aug 22, 2010 and I have fabulous locked in rates. Since that forum is no more, I still have the group space (as well as other group dates for May, June, July, Sept and Oct) that is available. Since these groups were taken out the second the sailings opened, the prices are rock bottom. If the prices go down (which they might), I will get them reduced. All come with onboard credit so it really is a great deal!
