One Alaska sailing cancelled

The May 20th sailing of the Summit has been cancelled.
The ship is going into drydock to repair a thruster bearing.
Passengers will receive a full refund and a free 7 day cruise.

Hi Blizzard,

Just wanted to add the "rest of the story" to your post so no one gets the wrong impression about what happens when the pods fail on a Celebrity M-class ship.
You are correct about the free cruise on the May 20 sailing. What you did not cover what happened to the passengers on the cruise before the cancelled cruise for drydock. Those passengers missed over one half of their planned itinerary on a thirteen night cruise and the only real compensation was a $200 onboard credit per cabin. Granted there were some winners on the cancelled cruise but there were also some big losers on the May 7 Summit cruise and this problem still has not been resolved by Celebrity. I don't mean to dwell on this topic but I just wanted to post this to set the record straight on this point and give the whole story.

As I recall there was a thread about that at the time.
They did seem to drop the ball for the passengers on that sailing.

I was a passenger on the May 7 sailing and to say they dropped the ball is quite an UNDERSTATEMENT. We miseed two ports Seattle and Sitka. Never got closer than 6 miles to the Hubbard Glacier and went throught the Inside passage at night because Celebrity forgot to order a pilot and we sat dead in the water for 9 hours. We were told untruths on a daily basis by the crew.

The message here is read your cruise contract. It says that Celebrity does NOT WARRANT their ships to be SEAWORTHY nor the food to be eadible. OOOPs I forgot the contract comes after your fare has been fully paid and the deadline for cancellation with a refund has passed.
Would you buy anything that had a warranty the said they do not guarantee it will ever work.

While not denying your specific cruise experience, your facts apart from those of your cruise are incorrect or absent useful additional information.

You will find the "Cruise Ticket Contract" published on Celebrity's web site. Most, but not all, lines do so as well. For those that aren't "connected", any TA can provide a copy. MSC is one line that provides them only "on request". I'd say Celebrity does a better job than most in making their contract easy to find.

You'll also find the contract language in Celebrity's "Clause 3" (as regards the issues you mention above above) pretty much boilerplate across the entire industry. Some do it in more general terms, and some are just as specific. The entire industry is notorious for their lopsided contract language. Other than tax benefits, there are other well understood (and aggravating) reasons for flagging vessels in such peculiar places as Liberia.

I just checked my old Princess and Holland America cruise contracts and there is no warning in the contract about "NO guarantee about the seaworthiness of their ships". Only one other cruise line besides Celebrity has felt it necessary to include such a clause in their cruise contract. While all cruise lines have the same "boiler plate" statement about weather, wars, etc, Celebrity is almost the only cruise line to feel that such a clause is really necessary.
To some degree some of these clauses in the cruise contract are necessary, for example I would not want to sail into a hurricane because the cruise line felt that some passengers might be upset, but to use such a contract to hide behind because of a known design flaw to your particular ships is in my mind unconscionable. Just MHO.

Sometimes the same issues are covered SO broadly in the contract language that a person would never realize what it could cover! For example, you gotta love Carnival's approach to these same questions (quoted as follows) but at least they make it available pre-cruise. How in the he** is a guest supposed to gain a "full understanding of the character of the Vessel"? Show me them maintenance inspections, mate! At least Celebrity, with their pre-published contract terms, tries to point out some of the "possibilities". As I've said -- none of these contracts favors the pax.

"The Guest admits a full understanding of the character of the Vessel and assumes all risks incident to travel and transportation and handling of Guests and cargo."

CAnderson, Oh, I quite agree that the purpose of all cruise contracts is to make them not understandable. I agree that the cruise lines need to have some protection but on the other hand they can or should not be allowed to deceive passengers about major defects in their ships. I still can't think of any other industry, that serves so many in America, that is allowed to operate this way.
Just MHO.
