Wow...it's like deja vu...I went away for a while and when I came back the jeans discussion is still going on! I guess this is one topic that won't go away.
Anyway, hello to all my longtime CLF friends! Long time no type! I am going on my first Celebrity cruise this fall and that's why I am scrolling through these threads today....

Hi Julie! It's nice to "see" you. The reason for the discussion is Celebrity has just announced a new dress code for dinner which includes jeans.
What ship are you cruising on this fall and where to? Can I answer any questions?
Regarding jeans or no jeans - here's my 2cent's worth:
I think sometimes people can look nice (I mean casual nice, not formal nice) in jeans.
Yes, I live in Texas but that's not the reason I feel this way. I lived in Northern California and Florida waaaay longer than I have lived in Texas. Every place I have ever lived, as well as every place I have ever visited, there are people wearing jeans to all sorts of dressy events. We travel overseas a couple times a year and while we are on the go we usually hit some really nice places and events. There LOTS of jeans in 'dressy casual' atmospheres . People wear them to nice restaurants...to clubs and resorts...to elegant spas...to museums and to violin concertos.
Celebrity is no doubt seeing this the same way I am. Jeans are not necessarily "hillbillly" or "redneck" and not everybody wearing jeans is uncouth.
For ladies, if jeans are worn with a blazer, a pretty top, nice accessories, and nice shoes and handbag, they can fairly high style. And I have seen plenty of handsome men on cruiseships (not spring break specials...I mean really nice cruiseships) wearing clean well-cut jeans, often with Polo shirts, Sperry Topsiders loafers and Rolex watches. Definitely NOT rednecks!
I guess the real question is - how do you keep the people who want to wear their old dirty and torn jeans, or jeans that show butt-cracks...or that pathetic guy with the baseball cap from ruining your pleasant dinner atmosphere ? I don't know. We could just as easily ask why doesn't Celebrity prevent that lady from wearing the too-tight fuschia and orange polyester moo-moo with the lime green feather boa to dinner. Can we really govern bad taste ...whatever the fabric?

Hello Garry, nice to 'see' you too!! We are going on the Century, Barcelona to Barcelona. My first Celebrity cruise and I am looking forward to it!
Yes, I do have a few questions. I don't see anybody else going on this particular trip under the roll call, so I can't ask my excursion questions. But I did have a cabin question, which I posted back in May under the ship/Century catagory. Not one response yet, although lots of people seem to have read it. In fact, there are several threads in there from several people which have had lots of views (some have had over 100 views) but almost no responses. You think maybe the jeans discussion is more fun?

Sure some people can look good in jeans - but jeans and "include a certain elegance"(from the Captains club newsletter regarding the smart casual and above dress nights) - somehow those words do not go together in my opinion.

It would take some effort to make an outfit with jeans "include a certain elegance", but it could be done.
I would never wear jeans to anything formal (hey, I am a huge fan of evening gowns!!) but for a country club casual evening I can take a nice pair of dark denim jeans and make it fairly elegant. I would add a tasteful silk blouse, some metallic colored high heeled strappy sandals, a drop-dead gorgeous necklace and earring set, and a pretty belt and matching handbag...maybe top it with a black velvet beaded jacket or blazer. Yeah, it can be done. But will everybody wearing jeans go to that much trouble?

I am saying I COULD do that....but if the truth be known the only time I wear jeans while cruising is on shore, on the excursions. Especially if it's cool outside. For example in the Mediterranean in October and November you can bet I will be wearing jeans...for example when visiting Pompeii or going to a Tuscan winery. But I never wear jeans on the ship. If I really want to wear pants I go with some drapey black dressy slacks...never jeans. I am just explaining how someone COULD dress up jeans with a little effort!

Hi Julie! Welcome back! Unfortunately to too many people jeans means the old worn ut cutoff jeans not the $400 a pair chic ones from the designers. I think it is more of the image than the actuality.
You always take the most fun cruises! Barcelona to Barcelona!

Hey there Nealie-Poo! How have you been?
$400 jeans? Wow! They'd better have gold threads and diamonds in the zipper!
Yes, I am looking forward to this trip. It wasn't that long ago when we were last in the Mediterranean, but this time we'll be going to a few places we've never been. Like Tunesia. And for the ports where we have been I think I'll choose some really off the wall excursions just for fun.

Mostly recovering from our TA from last year. This year we are doing home repairs (new windows, attic work, new doors, tile in the downstairs.........)
Oh yes, and a short cruise the week before Christmas to the Southern Caribbean (it was cheap)
