Grand Cayman Tortuga Rum Cakes now available in the states

I had been told by people that when you get to Grand Cayman to stock up on Tortuga Rum Cakes. It used to be that you could only get them there.

That has changed in the last few years. I recently saw them in a local liquor store! But if you don't leive near me, you can get them on line.

The most expensive place is straight from Grand Cayman at
TortugaRumcakes.com - Tortuga Rum Co. Ltd

But if you buy them from a place that has already imported them in bulk, the price drops. Amazon had a package of sampler cakes (they had two prices available, so make sure you don't pay too much) and Vermont Country Store sells the one pound cake. I believe they are the first ones to offer it in the US.

Check online, there are other places that offer these, and for those of you who are creative, there are recipes for cakes that are supposed to taste just like them.

    Thanks Mindy!

Whenever we stop in Georgetown I always go to several of the Tortuga shops for samples of the variious flavors of rum cake. Never bought one, though!

I have a good recipe for a rum cake that is very close to the ones sold by Tortuga. Of course, I use the Tortuga rum in them.

I've tried many rum cakes while traveling in the Caribbean and have bought several, but the Tortuga brand is definitely not one we prefer. There are many others that are so much better. And it's not just the rum cake, but their rum is also not all that great.

Obviously, just my personal opinion. But try them all and find one you like; there's something there for everyone.

    Pete,
I will be honest, I have NEVER tried the Tortuga ones. We were supposed to go on a cruise to Grand Cayman, (that's how I found out about it), but our itinerary changed after Ivan hit the island.

If you have a favorite, please let us know! That's what makes horse racing.

I have ordered many times direct from Tortuga. Never thought to check elsewhere. Amazon does have a decent price on the 33oz ones. Too bad it isn't on the Weight Watcher diet.

If you do points, you can add it to your diet, but you have eat very teenee tiny pieces. One cake will last you 4 months with one sliver a day.

I wish I could tell you the name, but all I remember is that the last time we got some, we tried a sample and it blew us away with flavor - so much more than Tortuga. And it was extremely moist - we found Tortuga to be a little on the dry side.

But hey, as I said, it's all a matter of personal likes and dislikes. It's sort of like cruising; the fun is in the sampling until you find one that suits you the best.
