    Fire on Carnival Splendor

    This just in....

Things got a little too 'hot, hot, hot' aboard the Carnival Splendor during a cruise along the Mexican Riviera.

Early Monday morning a fire broke out in the 925-foot ships forward engine room around 6 a.m. Guests whose rooms were near the engine room were evacuated to the Lido Deck, which was on an upper level and opens onto the outdoors. The fire was reported out by 9 a.m., but a re-flash occurred, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The 925-foot ship, with 33-hundred passengers and more than 11 hundred in crew, is dead in the water about 55 miles west of Punta San Jacinto or about 150 miles south of San Diego. The ship's crew is working to re-start one of the vessel's main generators in the forward engine room. Since there is still a lot of smoke in the area, guests are being provided with bottled water and food items and are able to move around on the ship's upper open deck areas.

According to Carnival, there were no injuries to guests or crew reported.

The Splendor was on the first leg of a seven-day cruise that departed Sunday from Long Beach, Calif. The ship's normal itinerary includes stops in Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

OH BOYGlad no crew or passengers were injured
Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to know why I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved.

I hope they get the ship back to port without incident. I imagine spending the night on a ship without electricity would be rather hot.
It's good that no one was hurt.

    The Carnival Splendor cruise ship is in limbo about 150 miles south of San Diego after a fire in the engine room. <STYLE type=text/css> #plain_module { width: 590px; height:170px; border: none; float:left; margin:0px; font-size:12px;} #plain_module img {border:none; width: 13px; height:14; border: 0px; margin:0px; } #plain_module .mini_main { margin: 0px; padding:0px; width:585px; height:220px; repeat scroll 0 0} #plain_module .mini_item_header {padding:10px 0px; margin: 0px 0px; font-size:16px; color: #555555; border-bottom:1px dotted #CCCCCC;} #plain_module .mini_item {padding:5px 0px; margin: 0px 0px;} #plain_module a { color: #49A3CA; text-decoration:none; } #plain_module a:hover { color: #F98419; text-decoration:underline;} span.gray {color:#949494;} .mini_main li{list-style-type: none;background-image: url(http://www.aolcdn.com/travel/bullet);background-repeat: no-repeat;background-position: 0 1px;padding-left: 10px;}</STYLE>

The US Coast Guard is sending two ships to the scene, Petty Officer Henry Dunphy tells AOL Travel News. The location is about 55 miles west of Punta San Jacinto, Mexico.

"The fire has been extinguished however there continues to be smoke in the area and the ship's fire crews remain on the scene," Carnival Cruise Lines says in a statement.

Currently the ship is operating on emergency generators, while the crew tries to re-start one of the main generators in the forward engine room, Carnival says.

The 113,000-ton ship has 3,266 guests and approximately 1,100 crew members onboard, according to Dunphy.

The ship left Long Beach, Calif. on a 7-night Mexican Rivera cruise on Sunday evening. The fire broke out in the engine room around 6 a.m. this morning, and took about three hours to contain. Then there was a re-flash about 45 minutes after that, Dunphy says.

The ship's engines were shutdown. "At this point they are trying to get the propulsion started again," he says.

Guests were moved from their cabins to the open Lido deck.

"Announcements began at approximately 6.30am advising guests of the situation and asking them to move from their cabins to the ship's Lido Deck, which is an upper level deck with outdoor space," Carnival says in its statement. "Guests are being provided with bottled water and food items and are able to move around on the ship's upper open deck areas."

Two guests and a crew member reportedly suffered panic attacks, but no other injuries were reported.

The Coast Guard is sending two cutters to the scene to assist, the 225-foot-long Aspen out of San Francisco and the 110-foot Edisto out of San Diego, Dunphy says.

UPDATE: Carnival says in an updated statement that a decision has been made to terminate the voyage.

"If power is restored, the ship will return to its homeport of Long Beach, Calif. under its own power. However, arrangements for tugboats have been made so that, in the event power is not restored, the ship will be returned to a port with tugboat assistance."

The cruise line also says guests are being given access to their cabins.

Oh Boy, not good for those who just boarded yesterday. That was a real short cruise.

    Unhappy

The first I heard was a Carnival ship on a MR cruise was disabled south of San Diego. I was sure it was the Spirit which I sail in 20 days. I didn't even think about Splendor.

I am sure they will all get full refunds and probably a discount on a future cruise.
Unfortunatly, that does not help very much for those that have limited vacation time and are not spending it bobing around and not have too good of a time.

They have 2 months to get that ship fixed before I am scheduled to board her....

    Here's the latest;

    UPDATE, 4:56 PM ET:

Carnival says it plans to terminate the current voyage of the Splendor as soon as the vessel can reach a port. The ship remains dead in the water off the coast of Mexico, and the line says the ship's crew still is working to restore power.

"If power is restored, the ship will return to its home port of Long Beach, Calif. under its own power," the line says in a new statement. "However, arrangements for tugboats have been made so that, in the event power is not restored, the ship will be returned to a port with tugboat assistance."

Carnival says the U.S. Coast Guard has dispatched a vessel and an aircraft to the ship's location.

    WHEC-722; USCG Morganthau

Currently west of Ensenada sailing at 21 knots toward the Splendor.

    Heading 169 degrees.

I would estimate arrival at about midnight or 1AM.
