Just out of curiosity, why did Carnival (as opposed to Costa) take the Splendor if they have no plans of making a class out of it? Just curious if anyone knows the reason behind this.

Good question. I want to believe that they(Carnival) wanted to try the larger Spa(Cloud 9) and the Spa stateroom concept in the Carnival brand. That's where the difference stops between the Splendor class and the Conquest class Carnival ships. The Samsara Spa and Spa stateroom concept on the Costa Concordia & Costa Serena seem to be a huge hit for them in Europe.

Also, don't forget, the Carnival Destiny(1996) is the only ship in a class too. The Triumph & Victory(1999 & 2000) are really modified Destiny Class vessels with the extra cabins on the Lido Deck, so they were classed as Triumph Class ships.

Yeah I knew about the Destiny. I just imagine that those changes were made as an afterthought or something. With the Splendor though, they bought the ship knowing they wouldn't expand the class. That's what I don't get. Maybe I'm just used to having multiple ships in a class. It just seems strange that they bought a ship intended for another brand with an established class, just so they wouldn't expand on it.

But as you said, they probably did it to see if the expanded spa facilities would work on Carnival. That would make sense I guess, except the Dream will also have expanded spa facilities as well.

I'll stop rambling now.

With the retractable roof over the center pool area and open aft, Splendor would make an ideal Alaska cruise ship. I expect it will be cruising Alaska in 2010.
