Hanna-caused detour prompts 'mutiny' on Carnival Miracle

Pity the poor passengers on the Carnival Miracle this week. The New York-based ship was supposed to head to the Caribbean to visit such popular ports as San Juan and St. Thomas. But thanks to Tropical Storm Hanna, the 2,124-passenger vessel never got further than the Bahamas and will be spending Friday more than 1,000 miles off course in -- get this -- Newport, R.I.

"a crowd of passengers formed near the purser's desk to chant "refund, refund" in a scene that he describes as "chaos." And passengers have "lined up for hours protesting the only (other) way they know how . . . adjusting their gratuities down to zero!"

I'm sorry they didn't get the cruise they were hoping for but are you kidding me??? These people think it's the helps fault that there was a hurricane??? They should be ashamed of themselves and just be damn happy that the Captain is steering them out of harms way!! A change in itinerary is the chance that each one of them took when they cruised during hurricane season!!!

Carnival should have just turned it into a New England/Canada cruise and announced it beforehand. Better that than to surprise all the the passengers.

Good grief If you book in hurricane season expect itineraries be changed, if it doesn't, great UGH Obviously those cruisers are not on cruise forums
Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to know why I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved.

What a shame that they punished the hard working crew by not tipping. This didn't hurt the Captain or the cruise line it just hurt the wrong people trying to make a living. Shame on them.

    I agree!

I had a client on the Grandeur of the Seas going to Bermuda out of Baltimore two years ago. Due to a hurricane, the captain decided in the best interest of safety to head north instead. He said he had no problems at all with the decision - after all, he was on vacation enjoying a nice cruise and got to see some Canadian and American ports he never thought about visiting. So, he and his wife made the best of it and had a wonderful time. But he said there were many others behaving badly, just like in the story.

It's a shame that every time something doesn't go the way people want it to go, they immediately want a refund or are looking for a lawyer to sue someone!

The bottom line is that no one can control Mother Nature.

When you travel during the Winter, you take your chances with snow. When you travel during the Summer or Fall, there's always the chance of hurricanes. Whenever you travel, there's always a chance of something happening - that's one of the main reasons why travel insurance is a must, although it wouldn't have done much help in this case.

The fact is that, as was stated in the story, a cruise ship can divert course to avoid bad weather, whereas with a land-based vacation you're pretty much stuck where you are.

I can understand people complaining about things that are within the cruise line's responsibility. But to complain about something no one has control over and is obviously within the best interest of passenger safety is ludicrous. It's too bad Carnival will get alot of bad press about this simply for trying to do the right thing.

And to withhold gratuities from those who are still providing the day-to-day service to these passengers and have no part in any of the decision-making process is even more absurd! How would these people like it if someone took money out of their pocket while they were doing their job?

Hopefully, these obnoxious passengers causing all the problems will not sail again so the rest of us don't have to be subjected to their childish behavior on any future cruises.

" Good Afternoon Cruiser's,, This is Capt. Gustove,, We are running into one of God's Funny little jokes,, Hurricain Hanna,, For your safty, we have changed ports of call and will be staying away from these 15 foot seas with major swells.
For those that have congregated at the Purser's desk Crying and removing your gratuities, causing major hate and discontent. We the Capt. and Crew understand how upset you must be.. Therefor we will be launching 3 of our life boats for you to resume the rest of your Caribbean Cruise. We are now asking for 3 people to step up and take Charge of all discontent's. Have a wonderfull trip"
