Neal- thanks for the support and seeing the point I was trying to make.
Ken- What I am trying to say is I can see why passengers would be mad. Personally, I cruise in most cases for the ship, and not the ports. Been to almost all of them in the Caribbean so the "getting there is part of the fun" holds true for me. My wife and I have taken the same cruise these pasengers were on when the Carnival Legend sailed out of NYC prior to switching the Carnival Miracle to this route.
While I wouldn't have been happy about the switch I would have delt, I am on vacation and that's all it matters. I tend look at things differently because for the past few years I have been fortunate enough to take 2 or 3 trips a year. But again playing devils advocate, let's say this was my only trip this year or maybe the only trip I have taken in a few years. I saved up for this trip and this was going to be the best week I've had in a long time. I don't think I would have minded that the intinery was changed, as long as I knew ahead of time that it was. But, to go all the way to the Bahamas and then turn around and go to Newport RI can be upsetting to some.
To be honest, while Newport is nice, it's not my cup of tea. This is coming from a guy who has sailed all his life, including competively at a high level during my college years. Newport, while being a sailing mecca, it is too "Muffy & Buffy" for me and while I probably would have gotten off, I doubt I would have enjoyed it.
To me going to the Bahamas is like a tease for many. I don't consider the Bahamas " the Caribbean" since it's weather is more like Florida, but many do and to sign up for a Caribbean Cruise, make it to the Bahamas and then turn around and go Newport, RI could upset alot of people, again especially when this is your One big trip a year or in many years.
This is where I see Carnival failed and angered it's customers. Knowing right from the start they were going North may have still upset some, but I don't think you would have seen the same reaction. The idea to change course was poorly thought out in my opinion. Why go to Newport when they had a multitude of other ports to choose from? Cape Canaveral, Savannah, Charleston, Norfolk, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Bermuda? This is why argue that Carnival is partially at fault here.
