Carnival Legend passenger jumps off balcony

Passenger on the Carnival Legend jumps off his balcony early this morning, with his family inside cabin!! The Legend will be late to dock tomorrow, and is confirmed on Carnival website.

Here is the update from the carnival website.

    Carnival Legend - Sailing May 28, 2006
    Sailing Update:
    May 27, 2006 – 11:00 AM

The Carnival Legend has been involved in a search and rescue operation on the current cruise. Due to this situation, the ship will be delayed returning to New York on May 28, 2006, with arrival now estimated at 7:00 PM.

We request that guests sailing on the May 28 cruise plan to arrive at the terminal for embarkation after 8:00 PM. There is very limited space, seating and services available in the terminal.

We have not yet determined a revised departure time. In addition, please be aware that we may need to slightly modify the itinerary for this cruise.

We sincerely apologize for this embarkation delay.
Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to know why I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved.

    Unhappy

Very sad for the family left behind.

But as has been said many many many times already, jumping ship is the easiest way of ending it all, and there is absolutely nothing that a cruise line can do to prevent it, apart from closing in all open deckspaces, and that just isn't feasible as an option.

People can chew over the whys, wherefores and whatevers til the cows come home, but sadly there are people in so much emotional pain that no amount of counselling or love from family and friends will ever bring them back from the brink.

It is often said that people who end it all act normally, show no outward signs of a problem, and its so very very true. Desperation can push even the strongest person over the edge and to ask for help can be seen as a sign of weakness, so ending the pain is, to the sufferer at least, the easiest and quickest way to deal with their problems.

When this happens aboard a ship its inevitable that the media will swarm like vultures picking at the bones....when infact they should be showing the family the highest level of respect. Sadly respect for the dead, regardless of how they died, doesn't seem to be a priority in this day and age.

Could only read so much of this over on the other place before I gave up in frustration. Thank God they locked that thread. A guy made an innocent comment about how his wife was upset about their cruise being cut short a day and the cheerleader vultures attacked. Why do I even go over there other than my roll call???? When tragedies like this happen, they affect many people in many ways. Just as we feel for the family, other people have a right to be upset for someone doing something stupid and also disrupting their life and plans also. It just is.

Urrgh. I will stop typing now before I continue to think with logic and insensitivity.............

I saw all those posts last night. It is so sad on so many levels. I just can't imagine what it is like for the family in that cabin and then the extended family. How difficult it must be for everyone on board and the new passengers. Also, and we've all worried about it or faced it, transportation changes can be extremely difficult to deal with. On the other board a husband shared with everyone how his wife was stressing over a change in transportation plans involving a limo and how her plans for a birthday dolphin swim have changed. However, they both posted and tried to explain how sad they felt over the tragic situation. It was very obvious that they were totally stressed over everything. Unfortunately, the posts were seen very negatively.

BobbyK - This is one of the reasons I am against all the cruise ships getting too big, like the Freedom, and the newly announced Genesis Class ships. I remember when the Grandeur (?) hit the peir in the caribbean last spring and what kind of chain reaction disruption that caused everyone. Just think how this will be when one of these new Genesis Class ships has a problem or disruption. Will the cruiseline staffs be able to handle it (staffing, training, resources, etc.)?

Many people look forward to their cruises. Some for a year or more. This may be the single positive thing in their lives for that year It can be very traummatic to them when their travel is disrupted. Sympathy for all and recognize that people's emotions are not right nor wrong -- they just are.

Cruise Cat, You are so right. I hadn't thought about what a domineo effect it would be on these even bigger ships.

Chuck, I agree with you. Some of these ships are getting way to large. Even though I have sailed the Conquest Class ship, I'd rather sail a Fantasy class again before sailing a Conquest class.

I've also read the thread from that other site. Some of those people were very insensitive and I'm glad the host finally stepped in and locked the thread. Haven't found that on this thread. I heart felt thoughts go out to the family.

Have to admit that its got me too Joey. Even CruiseJunkie doesn't list it in their events section, which is very very unusual as they are usually the first to list something like this.

The Carnival UK site has no info either, but that doesn't really surprise me that much as its par for the course for cruise lines to forget us over here :o
