A passenger from Carnival Cruise Lines Carnival Legend is feared drowned after jumping overboard during a 8-day Caribbean cruise from New York. The passenger, 35-year Ramesh Krishnamurthy, from Doylestown, Pa., had been arguing with his wife about their bar tab when he suddenly became agitated and climbed on the railing and jumped from the ship early Saturday morning.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson, Petty Officer Christopher Evanson, Krishnamurthy was likely under the influence of alcohol when he began arguing with his wife in front of their two children. At the time of the incident, the Carnival Legend was about 245 miles southeast of Bermuda.
As soon as the crew was notified, the captain sounded an alert and crew members began searching for Krishnamurthy. A Coast Guard C–130 airplane retraced the path of the ship as part of the search and the Coast Guard used computer programs to simulate the drift pattern of someone who would have entered the water along the ship's path. The search continued through Sunday afternoon before it was called off without any sign of the missing passenger.
The Carnival Legend arrived in New York Sunday evening about 12 hours behind schedule.
