Question Carnival Hikes Steakhouse Fees by almost 17%

Carnival Cruise Lines announced yesterday that they would be making some price changes to the steakhouse fees on many of their ships. The astounding part is the percentage of the price hike - a whopping 16.7%. Previously, passengers could expect to pay $30 to eat in the alternative/specialty steakhouses. You can now enjoy the privilege of paying $35 per person. Yikes!

Carnival Ships that include steakhouses are: Carnival Spirit, Carnival Pride, Carnival Legend, Carnival Miracle, Carnival Conquest, Carnival Glory, Carnival Valor, Carnival Liberty, Carnival Freedom, Carnival Splendor, Carnival Dream, Carnival Magic and Carnival Breeze. The Carnival Destiny will be receiving a steakhouse later this year during her extensive refit process.

A spokeperson from Carnival is quoted as justifying the hike with the following : "The increase was necessitated as a result of higher food costs and is consistent with other alterative restaurant charges within the cruise industry," Carnival says. "This is the first fee increase for the steakhouses in several years."

Will this deter you from choosing an evening at a Carnival specility steakhouse?

Are you a fan of the steakhouse experience on Carnival and not pleased with the changes?

Are you such a huge fan that this won't deter you in the slightest?

We paid $30 pp on the Carnival Miracle in late January. That is the cost of Carnival's Steakhouse Cover Charge on all ships with the Steakhouse, so they raised it by $5. I would still pay the extra $5 as it's still cheaper than eating at a 5 Star restaurant on land and we eat there just once per cruise.

Generally, we rebel against the extra fees, as we consider it removing some of the Luxury feel which cruise ships used to have...and we haven't eaten at a Cruise Ship Specialty Steakhouse yet...though have gone to a few Specialty Italian ones...so the extra hike makes it even more likely we won't do a Steakhouse on Carnival.

ouch - will be cruising on Spirit in April and although don't love the $5, won't deter me from the Steak house! Too fonder moments to bypass!

Perhaps it was wither that or a fuel surcharge ... though the price of a barrel of oil has actually fallen recently, so maybe not.

But food prices have gone through the roof. I would be willing to pay it IF (and this is a big if) the quality is that much better and they don't further reduce the quality in the MDR to make it more "special".

We resisted specialty restaurants for several years but really enjoy Chops on RCL. Since then we have been try others and have not found one as good. We had a nice dinner on the Carnival Spirit but it was just not as good an experience and Chops. Not sure if we would do it again with the prices rising.

Blizzard, Thanks for the Chops info...Might try that, especially since we're not enthused with their MDR

Blame Walmart - they started selling a better grade of beef driving everything up.

Walmart? The company noted for its attitude of "sacrifice everything but keep it cheap?" Seriously, we have tried their "premium" meat and it is no better than the medium grade beef at our local Tom Thumb. And they have a grade that is even better than that.

Of course, we are spoiled. When we were in Minnesota we had Iowa grain fed beef. It puts almost anything here in Texas to shame.
