Body of Newborn Found in Carnival Dream Stateroom

A deceased newborn baby was found by a crea member in a cabin on the Carnival Dream last Wednesday.

The baby's body is still in St Maarten. The Dutch authorities took custody of the body after they were notified by a ship's officer that the baby had been found dead.

The mother has been identified as a passenger, and an investigation is underway by the FBI.
There was one report that the mother was inm custody, but another says no details are being released, as it is an active investigation.

How odd, I am guessing the mother gave birth on board?

Dreadful news. I do hope the investigation yields some results.

I looked up Carnival Pregnancy Policy.

    Here it is:

Pregnant women are only allowed to sail if pregnant for 24 completed weeks or less at time of cruise disembarkation. All pregnant women are required to produce a physician’s letter stating that mother and baby are in good health, fit to travel and the pregnancy is not high-risk. The letter must also include the estimated date of delivery (EDD).

Some more facts have come to light over the course of the day:

A local St. Maarten news outlet, the St. Maarten Island Time, has stated that the woman was indeed pregnant when she boarded the ship, but claims not to have known. There is an FBI investigation team onsite working directly with Dutch authorities.

Apparently, the woman claims the baby was born after leaving port in Florida on Oct 8, but before arriving in St Thomas on October 11.

More details are being gathered currently and we'll be sure to keep you updated.

Sooooooooooo, you mean to tell me that the Carnival Reps at the port did not notice her condition either? Wow!! Could someone splain to me how a young 20 yr old female does not know she's pregnant? Is it that it's possible she wasn't educated on the topic?

There is a whole reality show on just this topic, "I didn't know I was pregnant". Sometimes it is hard to tell depending on the size and shape of the woman. And sadly many young women are not educated. Just wonder why she didn't call for medical help when she went into labor? She had to be in a lot of pain.

    Thanks for the update, Tim!

Like Jen mentioned ... women sometimes claim they did not know.

Still, no excuse for not calling for help when she went into labor! Maybe the baby could have been saved.

I was just thinking the same thing, Jen. There are some many women this happens to that there is a TV show about it - it's just an awful tragedy all around. Hopefully, it allows the Carnival staff to draw some useful observations for how to handle such situations in the future.

I agree that most of us (women or men) find it unbelievable that someone couldn't know they were pregnant, but it does happen, even to women who are educated about it. Not everyone's bodies work the "usual" or "typical" way.
