I tell the people as soon as I meet them that I am horrible at names. Things, I remember, names I don't. Then I tell them that I am apologizing in advance for when I do screw up.

Wonder if Celebrity will let me do specialty seating only with couples named John and Mary?

Really offended by being called your first name? That has never crossed my mind. I like the personal relationship it provides.. When the servers tell me there name, I call them that, so when I sit @ dinner.. I get.. Hey matt how are you doing tonight? ... Great Raphael, man was it hot today.... So Matt what you wanna eat tonight?

The conversation is more relaxed I think

    Method to their Madness

My guess is that Carnival has instructed them to call pax by ther first names, or the crew finds it in their best (financial) interests to do so. I don't care what you call me...just call me for dinner...

But I would be pretty sure that the majority of cruisers like the fact that Steward so-and-so or Waiter so-and-so actually remembered their name. I think that might positively affect how well someone is tipped.

I have absolutely no problem being called by my first name. I haven't ever had a crew member call me Gerri, it's usually Miss or Mrs Gerri.

I also don't look upon them as "domestic help." I look at them as people. I guess that never having "domestic help", other than a cleaning lady, it never became an issue for me. Perhaps when I grow up, I will then demand I am called Mrs Murphy, lol.

I agree with you, most call me Ms. or Mrs. Christine...which I feel honored that they even took the time to memorize my name....seeing how many people they see/meet each week and each cruise! I also agree that I have problems with remembering other's names....so I am impressed that they remember mine!
One cruise we went on w/ my inlaws...THEIR room stewart actually called us by name! Now that's something to me...that someone I didn't have daily contact with took the time and cared enough to remember our names!
