    Soda Cost

I have already found pricing of the soda cards on the Carnival Site. Can someone tell me what the price is for glass of soda/pop and the price for a can of soda/pop? We are trying to determine which is more cost effective .. hubby is the only one drinking soda/pop and wouldn't drink more than 2 cans a day.

We have a 15 night cruise planned so that is $110+ for a soda card alone.

    Thanks.

I usually carry a 12-pack on board, so I haven't bought a soda on a ship in quite a while. Perhaps someone can answer this based on the latest information, but the last time I bought one it was $1.50 for a can, plus the 15% gratuity. At about $7.95 per day for a soda package, you'd have to drink about 5 cans to pay for it.

Pete, thanks for the reply. We're flying in, so not planning to stop and get pop before boarding. I was thinking last time we paid about $1.75 per can ($1.25 per glass) plus tip. So even if $2.50 a can times 2 a day = $5 x 15 days = $75 .... it's cheaper to buy individually rather than the soda card.

So glad only one of us drinks pop ...

Canned sodas are now $1.95+ tip or $2.24.

You have to drink a lot to make the soda card worthwhile.

You can order soda coupons from Carnival Bon Voyage that will save you some money - i think basically the tip:

Thank you for the update on the pricing and the info about the BV coupons. I will look in to that. Hubby has decided not to get the soda cards, so I will check out the BV ones.

Boy, prices have sure gone up since I bought one!

But $2.24 for a can is really ridiculous. When you figure you can buy 4 12-packs on sale for $10, that's $.21 per can - they get it for less, so they're making more than $2.00 profit on each can - that's a ten-fold markup - not a bad profit margin.

Now I know why I don't buy sodas on board and instead put a 12-pack in my carry-on or buy one at the first port of call.

If you purchase the BV coupons, are they delivered to the cabin on the first day?

I think soda any time you purchase it at a restaurant etc. is a HUGE mark-up. It's one of my gripes ... many restaurants here charge up to $3 for a soda (fountain type). Yes, it is refillable normally but how ridiculous.

Yes, the coupons are delivered to your cabin on the first day.

And I hear what you're saying about markups on sodas - it really is a crime! Especially when you get them on draft!! The price of those is about 10 - 15 cents per 12 ounces, but they charge $2 or $3 - now that's a crime!

I'm not against someone making a profit, after all, I'm in business, so I understand this. And I've worked at places who charge 2 to 3 times the original cost for their goods, but to charge 20 times the original cost is price gouging, no matter how you put it.

I'm a beer drinker and when I buy a case of good beer (not the cheap stuff), I pay about $2 per bottle. So to pay $5 a bottle on a cruise is not what I would consider out of line. But if they charged 10 times the price for a beer, we would have major problems! No one would pay $20 for a bottle of beer. So what makes it okay to charge 10 times the amount for a soda?

But alas, they have a captive audience and they're going to squeeze as much money as they can out of them.

Okay, I'm done with the rant!

Pete, I understand and appreciate what you are saying. It's OK to rant.

    Thanks!

I just think it sucks to gouge the kids because those are the ones who drink the most sodas. They just take advantage of the situation.
