Smoking Guilelines for Carnival Cruise Line

UPDATE From the Carnival FAQs as of 2/29/12:

    What is the smoking policy?

Effective June 15, 2011, cigarette smoking in public venues will only be permitted in Carnival’s dance clubs as well as in designated areas within the casino and casino bar.

Smoking (including cigars) will be permitted in designated exterior open deck areas (starboard side) of all our ships. Additionally, smoking will also be allowed in the jazz clubs of the following ships: Carnival Destiny, Carnival Triumph, Carnival Victory, Carnival Spirit, Carnival Pride, Carnival Legend, Carnival Miracle, Carnival Conquest, Carnival Glory, Carnival Valor, Carnival Liberty, Carnival Freedom, and Carnival Splendor.

    * All Spa suites and staterooms, inclusive of the balconies, are an entirely smoke-free environment.

    * Effective December 1, 2011, smoking will be prohibited in all guest staterooms. Guests in balcony staterooms may smoke (including cigars) outside on their balcony.

Guests who smoke in their staterooms will be assessed a $250 cleaning and refreshing fee on their Sail & Sign account. Information on this fee is included in Carnival’s ticket contract.

Note: Electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes are only allowed in the designated smoking areas.

    Thanks for the update!

Balconies are still smoking areas with cigar smoking allowed.

The last I heard, smoking was a 24/7 habit. Since the dance clubs are only open a few hours during the evening and the casino is never open in ports and if it happens to be raining or cold out on the starboard deck then I guess smokers will be forced to pay for balconys??

It appears Carnival has gone completely family friendly and is throwing the "old" folks that built the company away?? They sure did not put much thought into this smoking policy.

No, I'm not a smoker. Just another citizen sick and tired of losing freedoms I did fight for in the Military to whinning people who just have to have EVERYTHING thier way. A man died flying aerobatics at an airshow so lets ban airshows. How stupid is that remark but there were hundreds of people ready to sign on to that idea a few days ago. Come on people, WAKE UP, your letting others drive your lives. Maybe you will get involved when they start charging "extra" for obesity on flights or even force you to stay in limited areas on cruise ships so you won't offend someone.

Carnival closed the "funnel" decks in 2007 which was a MAJOR reason my wife prefered Carnival. That was the only place onboard free from noise and kids and we always met and made new friends there. Now, they have put limits on smokers that we feel are far too strict. We started cruising other lines after the funnel deck got closed and cut our cruising from 3 per year down to maybe once a year. It just is not the same with so many kids running wild.

I got online to book our annual Valintine cruise last night and saw the new smoking policy. After a very short discussion with my wife, we have decided to scrap that $200 certificate we bought onboard our last cruise and do something else for that vacation. Our cruising days could be over?? I was thinking about a summer cruise out of NOLA next year as I love the river so much and have never been down it in warm weather but that would have been an NCL cruise because of the the ports it visits, not Carnival.

Ten years ago Carnival was more in tune with the things we enjoy but has slowly shifted towards younger families with lots of children. I wish them well and hope the younger generation can afford to spend the kind of money we did so the company continues to grow.

I'm getting off the soapbox now and will put my flame suit on, , , , knock yourselves out!!!

Well as long as he was careful enough not to crash into the crowd he was the only casualty.
Smokers are a bit more indiscrimnate about who they take with them.

I have to disagree with MOWDOC as my wife who is asthmatic and highly allergic cannot be around smokers. Some designated areas are fine but in the past on carnival all the public rooms had smoking, at least the ones like the piano bar which my wife loves for the singalongs and the whole casino. I found smokers smoking on both sides of the ship even though one side was designated for smokers. Having cigar bars and some clubs should be enough. Perhaps they should have an indoor smoking lounge on each public level for bad weather days but otherwise I like these new policies.

You are correct, it does take away your rights. But as with all progress this tends to happen, a minority's rights comes up against rights of a majority. The majority will tend to win eventually. It was almost bound to happen one day.
