My dad took his first cruise when he waas 63, and while he had spent most of his working years wearing a suit, he maintains that when he is on vacation, it is from the suit as well.

He will wear a suit jacket and tie for the first elegant night, then, depending on his mood, the second night he may or may not wear the tie, and no jacket.

Do lots of men do like your dad and dress up more for the first elegant evening than the second?

In my experience, most PEOPLE (not just men) tend to dress up more for the first formal night and are more relaxed on the second, although I'm not sure as to why. Maybe it has something to do with pictures already taken, people are TRULY in vacation mode by the second formal night (and don't want to dress up) or it's so close to the end of the cruise that they've already started packing.

My husband always wears his suit. It is dark and when there are 2 elegant night we bring 2 dress shirts and 2 ties. Most of the men on Carnival will wear a nice suit, very few tux and a lot sport jackets.

Cruises are the only time we get to dress up.

That would be my experience. The first elegant night is lobster night!

On our 7 Night Carnival Fantasy Thanksgiving most men wore dress pants or Dockers and a shirt with a collar and no tie. There were some sports coats and/or suits with dress shirs and ties. Only saw one man in a tux.

My DH wore a navy sports coat with a white golf shirt and light gray dress pants. He fit right in and was glad I talked him into leaving his tux at home. (It was the first time he'd ever been on a cruise without one.)

Will say that I saw no one in the dining room who had not somewhat dressed and looked nice. These Elegant Evenings are more like "Business Casual".
