U.S. cruise ship spills oil off Bahamas after propeller strikes sea floor

NASSAU, Bahamas -- A U.S. cruise ship's engine propeller struck the sea floor while docking Wednesday in the Bahamas, spilling oil and damaging the vessel, the Miami-based cruise company said.

The Celebration was forced to abandon its planned stop in Nassau and return to its homeport in Jacksonville, a Carnival Cruise Lines spokeswoman said.

The ship spilled an estimated 53 gallons of lubricating oil into the water, spokeswoman Jennifer de la Cruz said in an e-mail from the company's headquarters in Miami.

The company said it had notified authorities, including the U.S. Coast Guard. The vessel was scheduled to return to its homeport Thursday morning as scheduled.

Shipboard technicians were expected to examine the ship as it returned to the United States. Passengers were to receive a $50 per person shipboard credit for the missed call at Nassau as well as a 25 percent discount off a future cruises, she said

Lucky you, that's enough time for repairs.

The story said "U.S. cruise ship" I am pretty sure it is not a US flagged ship.

You know what they mean, the ship is owned by a US company which in this case happens to be Carnival Cruise Lines, owner and operator of the Carnival Celebration, which is homeported in Jacksonville, FL. As you know, none of the US cruise companies save NCL has US flagged cruise ships.
